Triple A becomes a reality for Toros The first signs that minor hockey in Clarington is undergoing undergoing a significant change began to filter in this past week, as submitted articles from area teams arrived in our office. Most obvious, aside from new sponsors- and players' names, is the designation that the Toros organization has been granted for this season, The move up in level to Triple 'A' began this past weekend with an official opening in pad B of the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Recreation Complex on Sunday night. The start to the regular season season is a culmination of a lot of hard work and diligence by a number of people over the years. What once began as an idea in a boardroom of executive members has now become a reality. But it wasn't without its criticisms and second-guessing by some who wondered if the idea to move up in level was a good one. Now that the time has arrived and teams are playing their first games of the regular season, there seems to be nothing but optimism as those closest to the program look ahead to the future. Bowmanville has always iced competitive hockey teams at every level. Over the years, the minor hockey organization has been rewarded with countless provincial provincial championships. A small desk drawer here in our office is home to the last writeup that appeared in our paper for 32 teams that won All-Ontario championships during a period from 1947 to 1996. It's interesting leafing leafing through the pages, reading some of the events that unfolded for teams and players who have been fortunate enough to capture a provincial title. The stories date as far back as the Breslin's Red Raiders who won the Juvenile 'B' title after defeating Bolton in the final of the 1946-47 season. The story dated Thursday, April 3, 1947 in The Statesman read as follows: "Before a crowd estimated at over 2,000 people, the Breslin Red Raiders took the two-game, goals to count series with Bolton at Oshawa Arena by a score of 15-12, but lost the final game.5-2. An earlier win had given the locals a six goal lead." That championship paved the way for the Legionnaire Legionnaire Juveniles, the St. Mary's Redmen, Frank's Variety Peewees, Knapp's Towing Major Bantams, and so on over the years to duplicate the feat. How long will it be before another Toros team, particularly particularly at the Triple A level, celebrates a provincial championship? championship? The answer may come as soon as this season. Who knows? History is on their side. Webco Crane and Hoist debut in Markham The Webco Crane and Hoist Minor Pecwee 'A' Toros had to play four games in two days to start their season at a tournament in Markham. The thrid game saw the Toros up against the home team from Markham. The Toros won the hard-hitting, tight checking game by a score of 2-1. The victory earned them a berth in the quarter- finals. After three periods and one overtime against Kana- ta, the teams were still tied 3-3. In the second overtime period, the Toros lost the game 4-3. Only three games into the regular season, Bowmanville Eagles head coach Mike Posavad has sent a message to his club that is expected to be heard loud and clear. With extra players on the rosier, choices have to be made each night to put five regular players in the stands. On Sunday night against Trenton, three of the players who got to view the game from the stands were veterans. By having Mike Heffering, Sean Haynes and Darcy Stoncadgc watch the game in shirts and ties instead of hockey sweaters and helmets, the rest of the club has been served notice that to stay in the lineup, they have to perform up to expectations. "We arc trying some different things to see what works," said Posavad about sitting out veteran players. "All the players know they have to come to play." Haynes and Stoncadgc will be relied upon to provide some offence as the season progresses, progresses, while Heffering is a defenceman who can play on the forward lines if needed. In their absence, it gave the coaching staff an opportunity to sec what some of the younger players can do. Rookies Jon Ross, Andrew Smalc, and Chris Sturgc played a strong game, and in fact, were used in key situations late in the game that the Eagles lost by a 5 J 3 score. ; "They had a heck of a game," praised Posavad. "They worked hard and did exactly what we asked them to do. They played the body and didn't try to do anything fancy." > The trio was rewarded for the efforts. Smale had a goal and an assist, while Ross also scored. It was the first goal of the season for both. Sturgc contributed with an assist. 1 The Eagles return to action on Friday night when they visit Bancroft. On Sunday night they host Wellington. Game time is 7:30 p.m. SOCCER CLUB CHIPS IN - A number of books and videos on the subject of soccer were purchased recently by the Clarington Public Library Bowmanville Bowmanville Branch.
