Clarington is still in the running for the project, which could change the face of the GTA, she says. "It's been a very good year for us with both federal and provincial governments committing support," the mayor says. "Now with their commitment we can continue to be part of the process." The funding has reinstated designers on the teams working on the project project worldwide. The federal government recently announced a Si- million per year, three-year commitment to ITER, Canada's operating budget. The money will be used to keep Canada in the forefront of the international search to find a host site for the final phase of research to find a long-term, safe global energy energy source. "People don't realize how active we are and how strongly we're going," she says. "Canada is a country everybody likes. We have an approved process respected across the world. "There are a number of countries making a bid but if their country doesn't get it, they want Canada to get it .... everybody's comfortable comfortable with Canada getting it." Only two Canadian sites, one in Clarington, the other in the area of the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station are on the international short-list of potential sites. "It brings large foreign investment and a boost to technological development. Scientists will come from all over the world with their families. It opens all kinds of doors for universities. It just brings a whole new world to us. It's such a major project that will benefit benefit not only the Region but would benefit the GTA plus the whole world." At a recent meeting of the Canadian board, Mayor Hamre was re-appointed to the board while the Regional Regional chairman, Roger Anderson, Anderson, was appointed as an observer. The site announcement is expected by 2003. Merger studies get support MERGER from page 1 know what it would do to our taxpayers and theirs," she said at the meeting, adding, "I support financial studies." However, she said, once those studies arc done, it will be time to look at the question of amalgamation, not only from a financial standpoint but in consideration consideration of all the impacts on residents such as service levels and quality of living. "My heart says no but let's see what it would do," she said. Other councillors have voiced a willingness to see if another model of governance governance could be better for the taxpayer, Councillor Jim Schell said Oshawa has the right idea in clearing the way for unbiased studies. "I agree in principal with exactly what Oshawa is saying," he said. "It should be a green field with everything on the table." Oshavva's latest decision "makes the.whole process more workable," said Councillor John Mutton. "We'vè got to look at all . ways to save taxpayers' money." Roadwork to begin immediately ROADWORK from page 1 Director Stephen Yokes said a report has been prepared prepared examining possible solutions for the problems associated with the walkway. walkway. In the interim, the municipality has done some remedial work on the drain, lie said, noting a permanent solution must be found. However, the temporary fix seems to be holding. "Since we've done some work, there's only been one incident and the storm was large enough it was not unreasonable unreasonable to think that would have popped up." The Region's work on the new signals at the intersection and upgrades to the road is scheduled to begin immediately at a cost of $300,000. Residents speak out against dump proposal RESIDENTS from page 1 land use is not even allowed?" All letters against the application arc being collected to be forwarded to the MOE, she said. Speakers who came to council on behalf of a local residents' group reiterated concerns about the safety and accountability of the dump application. "This entire process was conducted conducted in a manner that was totally unprofessional, unreasonable and completely completely unacceptable to our members and the residents of our community," said Brian McKenzie, a representative representative for the Committee of Clarke Constituents. He contended a required public meeting held in the summer did not meet "even the most minimum standards for a project of this magnitude. "As first impressions go, litis was an eye opener to say the least, as to how Clarington Waste Processing Processing Centre plans to conduct public consultation." Mr. McKenzie raised concerns with the application application itself, including the reliability of a proposed liner meant to buffer the environment from leachate from the landfill. "We are gravely concerned with a proposal that would be put forth for consideration based on leachate collection technology that is known to be problematic and to have failed in actual landfill sites." Other concerns brought forward by the committee dealt with increased truck traffic volume, the impact on local surface water and creeks and property values for surrounding land owners. owners. Meanwhile, last week, a public advisory committee report was released recommending recommending the Region consider consider a new landfill site within Durham, for Durham. While it was only one of 27 possible recommendations in the report on ways to deal with waste, local politicians were quick to point out the recommendation recommendation would not he welcome if the site was to he hosted by Clarington. The current policy of the Region of Durham is against any new landfill site within its borders, borders, The report is one source of information for consideration consideration in an upcoming longterm longterm waste management plan being created by the Region's works department, • 40 AEROBIC CLASSES I BY CERTIFIED INSTRUCTORS • POWER PACING CLASSES • SUN TAN BEDS 164 BASELINE RD.
