By Jacquie Mclnnes Staff Writer • BOWMANVILLE - They've been working on the railroad all the live long day... and night, and day. Train enthusiasts from the Soper Valley Railroad Club will be showing off their passion'this Saturday, Oct. 16 and Sunday, Oct. 17 at Bowmanville High School. "We'll be in all three gyms. In the centre will be all the layouts of all scales (of size)," says Gary Jeffery, Jeffery, a founding member of the club, which began in 1979. "Around the perimeter there will be vendors with everything from model rail supplies to clothing; anything anything railroad related." The best part of the hobby is the fact it gives enthusiasts-a chance to use many varied skills, he says. "You're involved in carpentry, carpentry, electricity, electronics, photography; you have to understand how a real train works. You're reproducing the real thing in miniature form." The Soper Valley Club meets every Tuesday evening at the Visual Arts Centre. The doors are open Saturday Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and children or $6 for a family. The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board hosted the delegation, which visited facilities in the north end of the board. The group seemed especially impressed with class sizes in the KPR board's schools. /■■■-. "In Japan?-we have over 40 students students in every classroom per one teacher," said Tsunefumi Togashi, the group's leader, through an interpreter. "I have felt envious of these teachers here whodiave 20 to 25 students to a classroom." The group was similarly impressed with the students they met, said Mr. Togashi. "We have met so many children with so much potential. Most of them have vision and their own opinions, and they could express those opinions to us," he said. The group, which arrived in Ontario on Oct. 2, left on Oct. 11. THE SPINAL COLUMN OPTIMAL SPINE = OPTIMAL HEALTH According to the US Census Bureau, your odds of living to 100 years old arc growing every year. The following statistics will amaze you. In 1980, it was estimated that there were approximately 15,000 people over the age of a hundred. Today they estimate that there are approximately 37,000 people over the age of one hundred. By the middle of the next century, the year 2050, they estimate there will be over 800,000 people over the age of a hundred. What will life be like for you if you gel there? Will you be able to enjoy your life like some centenarians who are learning how to use a computer and writing books, or will you be like George Bums who said, "If 1 knew 1 was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!" Much of what your life is like in the future depends on the health choices you make today. You can be proactive and create a wellness lifestyle for you and your family now, or you can let yourself go until you have no choice because disease and degeneration have overtaken your life. Many of the people who are over 100 years old today suffer poor quality of life. They live with severe arthritis, pain and disease. Is this the way it's supposed to be? 1 doubt it! Consider these facts about the nursing home generation. Most seniors had no idea they were going to live as long as they have. Their healthcare philosophy was "if it ain't broke don't fix it." They had minimal education on wellness, and were, in general, not proactive about their health. Rather than wait until disease and degeneration take over our bodies, doesn 'I it make sense to lake care of ourselves now'/ What can we do today, to enjoy our lives more fully and prepare for a high quality of life down the road? We all know the answers; it's just a matter of making them part of our lifestyle. • Eat healthy foods • Reduce stress • Exercise regularly • Take care of your spine and nerve system, the lifeline of your body We all know 30 year old people who feel and act like they are 60, and we all know 60 - years - olds who feel and act 30. You deserve to live a long, healthy, quality life. One of the first things that people say when they begin receiving chiropractic care is that they .feel younger, healthier and more active. This is because they are experiencing their true health potential once again. Good health choices now will help you and your family age gracefully down the road. Don't wait until your health choices become life or death, or quality of life an issue for you. Make good health choices today and make chiropractic a part of your lifestyle. To learn more about optimal health and wellness, Dr. Herron hosts a workshop each Tuesday, evening from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. Please call 905-623-5509 to reserve a seat.
