Page 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, October 14,1999 Bowmanville hydro workers battled Hurricane Floyd -- and won When a large portion of New York State lost power to the fury of Hurricane Floyd, four Ontario Hydro Services workers from Bowmanville were called into action. By Jennifer Stone Staff Writer Hurricane Floyd turned out to be no match for four Ontario Hydro Services Services Company workers from Bowmanville. Bowmanville. The Bowmanville contingent got the call just after midnight on Friday, Sept. 17 from the OHSC Central Call Centre. A large area of New York State was without electricity, thanks to the powerful hurricane that hit the eastern coast of the U.S. "The Central Call Centre starts calling area bosses and asking if they can release crews," explains OHSC line maintainer Boyd Knox. By 2 a.m., the local contingent, which included line maintainers Mike Rice of Courtice, Newcastle's Jim Wood, Randy McDougall of Bowmanville, and Mr. Knox, an Orono resident, was on the road. They headed for Poughkeepsie, N.Y., about an hour's drive north of New York City. "The storm hit there at about 5 or 5:30. p.m. (Sept. 16) ... they were really quick to get on- the phone" to ask for help from OHSC, says Mr. Knox. "They knew they had serious damage." The four from the Bowmanville OHS office were among ISO Ontario employees sent to help with the clean-up. Mr. Knox estimates about 80,000 people were without power as a result of Hurricane Floyd. "By Saturday, we got power back to the homes," he says. But there was still work to be done. The Bowmanville crew stayed in Poughkeepsie until the following Tuesday, helping with the clean-up. "Down there, it's all rolling hills and mountains. A lot of it (the damage) damage) was off-road," says Mr. Knox of the area near the Catskill Mountains. "It was an 18 hour day every day," says Mr. Knox. "It's a hard go, but you're running on adrenaline." This wasn't Mr. Knox's first experience experience in helping clean up after a natural natural disaster. He worked in both eastern eastern Ontario and Quebec after the ice storm of January, 1998. As in Quebec, Mr. Knox says the residents residents of New York State were glad to see the Ontario workers. "They really went out of their way to thank us," he says. The bill for the clean up was footed footed by the Central Hudson Gas and Electric company. "They looked after us -- all of our meals were paid, laundry, they brought food out for lunch," recalls Mr. Knox, who calls the five days in the Poughkeepsie area "a great experience." experience." "It's a tough go, but we were well looked after," he says.
