Internet site needs helpers 1 If you want to volunteer but don't know how to go about it, an Internet site now in the works may be able to help you out. The Social Development Council of Ajax-Pickcring is hoping to develop a site along with the Volunteer Centre of Durham Region that will list agencies looking for helpers, along with such information information as the types of services provided provided by the agency and when it needs volunteers. Duncan Read, executive director director of the Social Development Council, Council, says the "need for a much better method of getting access to information" on volunteering was highlighted in its Community Wellness Project. "People expressed a desire to volunteer, volunteer, but said they needed information and didn't know how to get it," Mr. Read explains. At the same time, many agencies agencies depend on volunteers for survival. "We're trying to bring together the two strands into an electronic system of accessing information," says Mr. Read, who believes there arc some 3,000 agencies agencies in Durham that depend on volunteers. volunteers. "Unfortunately, we don't know who they all arc," says Mr. Read, who is asking asking all agencies using volunteers to register register for the proposed site at no cost by calling Sue Swinglcr at the Social Development Development Council at 686-2661.
