Obituary | Obituary Verna Mildred Honey 1913 - 1999 A loving wife, mother and grandmother. Verna Mildred Hooey (nee Green) died at Lakeridge Health. Bowmanville. on Thursday. November 4. 1999. at the ige of 85. She passed away peacefully after a brief illness. illness. . The late Mrs. Hooey was a native of Allandale (now part of Barrie), where she was bom on November 21. 1913. Her parents were the late Bertram A. Green and Lottie Green (Webb). Her brother. Laurence B. Green of Gravenhurst. also predeceased her. Miss Green attended King Edward Public School and Barrie Barrie Collegiate Institute. After completing her education, she worked for Dr. F. A. Ross in Barrie where she met Albert Leonard Hooey on the steps of the old Post Office. They had passed each other several times previously, he dropping dropping off mail for Bank of Commerce and she for Dr. Ross. One day. Mr. Hooey struck up a conversation with her. and the romance burgeoned. They were married in Barrie on September 8. 1937 by the Reverend Reverend A. R. Sinclair. Three children followed: Wayne in 1940. Neil in 1944 and Cathryn in 1947. Mrs. Hooey was a devoted wife, who accompanied her husband around Ontario to bank postings in Claremont. Wood ville. Orono and Bowmanville. In Bowmanville since 1958. Mrs. Hooey was a long time member of the town's Bridge Club and performed in local plays. She volunteered with the Memorial Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary for some 18 years.'primarily running the hospital gift shop. Later, she volunteered for Community Care. Mrs. Hooey was an unwavering supporter of the Progressive Conservative Conservative Party. She was a loyal member of St. Andrew's Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Bowmanville and much involved with the WMS Evening Affiliated Group. Mrs. Hooey loved to spend time with her family at her cottage at Willow Bay near Kirkticld until 1962 and a later jpne at Hemlock Point. Lake Muskoka. She en* joyeopvdter-skiing in her earlier years and later playing playing tlw card game 31 with friends and family. Mr. jtnd Mrs. Hooey traveled over the years to the Maritimes. Europe. Florida and Hawaii. In 1984 Mrs, Hooey took her grandson. Brent, on a tour of Ireland and England to visit some of her old friends. Mrs. Hooey diligently maintained the apartments she and her late husband owned. She worked for Dr. Helmut Helmut YolInter in Oshawa and on switchboard at Bowmanville Bowmanville Memorial Hospital for many years. As well she was once the Provincial Court reporter for The Canadian Statesman. Mrs. Hooey was predeceased by her husband Len, after sixty-two years of marriage, in June of this year. She leaves her children Wayne (and Anne) of Toronto. Toronto. Neil (and Donna) of Bowmanville. and Cathryn (and Charlie Trim) of Newtonville. as well as her loving loving grandchildren. Brent of Bowmanville. Jill and Paul of Toronto and Laura Trim of Newtonville. The Reverend David McBride of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Presbyterian Church in Port Hope conducted the funeral service at the Northcutt Elliott Funeral Home on Saturday. Saturday. November 6th. Brent Hooey delivered the eulogy eulogy and Donna Hooey read a poem about how Mrs. Hooey had enriched the lives of all those she knew. Interment was at Barrie Union Cemetery. The family of the late Verna Hooey extend sincere thanks to friends and relatives for the support during the recent loss of a mother and grandmother.
