THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, DECEMBER 21,1999 PAGE A5 Tis the season to shop without folly Spend wisely this Christmas, credit counselling agency advises You can enjoy the spirit of giving and head into the millennium 'Christmas 'Christmas debt-free,' the Credit Counselling Counselling Service of Durham advises. "The sounds and sights of the holiday holiday season may bring forth squeals of delight from children, but they can trigger silent screams of anxiety in adults facing the annual rituals of crowded malls and the temptation to overspend," the Credit Counselling Service says in a news release. It offers the following lips: • Shop with a plan. "Shopping without a plan is like travelling without without a map: Without one, you can easily easily wander into dangerous territory." But a "few minutes spent planning will save you hours of headache at the mall and months of the burden of repaying repaying debts that result from overspending." overspending." The Credit Counselling Service encourages you to write out a gift list and include expenses you expect to incur over the holidays, such as spe cial meals, travel, decorations, cards and work-related functions. • Evaluate your list and budget realistically realistically for each item. Try to limit gift giving to family and close friends. Send a personal card or note to those you are unable to buy for. And remember that gifts of time - such as babysitting or handicrafts - "can mean more to the recipient than a store-bought item." • When you shop, take along your list and a calculator, keeping in mind the difference 15 per cent in taxes can make to each purchase. Tally your hill as you go and write it at the top of your list to help you keep your spending spending in check. Resist the temptation to buy something for yourself and don't buy 'jusl-in-casc' gifts. • Shop smart. Don't buy when you're feeling rushed or pressured. Give yourself time to comparison shop and use the phone to check cost and availability at various stores. If you don't enjoy shopping alone, ask a trusted friend who can help you slick to your plans. • Use cash whenever possible. If using credit, do so wisely by limiting yourself yourself to just one or two cards with the lowest interest rates; by keeping track of your purchases and monitoring monitoring them so you know how much you have charged; and by not charging charging more than you can afford afford to repay in 90 days or less. "Remember the true meaning of the holiday season," season," the news release adds. "Who got what, or how the gifts were wrapped will soon be forgotten. The best holiday memories come from the simple moments we share with the people we care about."
