BY BRAD KELLY Spoi ls Editor While mainstream sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball and baseball baseball bave long-standing traditions in high school athletics, one of the newest additions could gain the same popularity popularity over time. The Ontario Ultimate Frisbee Championships Championships were hosted by Bowmanville High School last week, with 16 teams of high school students from around the province taking part in the two-day event. While Aurora defeated King City in the final, the emphasis isn't on winning. winning. ; "You compete as hard as you want, but walk away and enjoy the spirit of the game at the end," says one of the organizers organizers of the event, Dan Macmastcr. The 'spirit of the game' he refers to is the sportsmanship that is exemplified by players on both teams. Combining physical physical fitness and teamwork, the game is a co-ed, non-contact sport that includes seven players on each team. The object (>f the game is to pass the Frisbee to teammates in order to advance up the field and pass into the endzone for a point. I There arc no referees, as each team has a male and female captain who work out any disputes that arise during the game. Taunting, dangerous aggression and intentional fouling arc prohibited. ; "It's co-ed, for all ages and is truly a team effort," says Macmastcr of the attraction attraction to the sport.'At BBS, over 60 students came out to practice, with the school fielding two teams for the championships. championships. ; "You can't have one star on a team. It's like a chain and every link has to be strong," he adds. ! The other attraction is the low cost to play. One of the BBS teams managed to advance to the semi-finals before being eliminated. "The team went in with the expectation expectation to go far, but I don't think the kids expected to get to the semis," says Macmastcr, who along with BBS teachers teachers Dan Stokes and Kevin MacLeod coached and helped organize the event. "It was great to see the interest. Now (BBS) is seen as a school that can attract the spirit of Frisbee," says Macmastcr, who was introduced to the game at Trent University. While a site for next year's Ontario high school championships is yet to be determined, BBS will be hosting an invitational invitational tournament with the intention of attracting more teams from the Durham Region to the sport.
