It's more than just a slightly goofy term causing sophomoric spoils writers writers to giggle; it describes an impending impending battle lor possession of the India rubber sphere in a game of lacrosse. It also describes the way coach Peter Vipond needs his Brooklin Red- men to play during the remainder of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Major Series final with the Brampton Excelsiors, a series the locals climbed j back into with a nail-biting 10-9 win V before about 1,500 at the Iroquois Park j Sports Centre Monday. ■ Vipond needs his team to play | without the weight of what's at stake, t but with the courage and urgency re quired to best the veteran-laden Excelsiors. Excelsiors. In short, they need to play loose, but at the same, time, with a certain amount of...well, you can figure it out. As far as Vipond is concerned, although although his club is still trailing 2-1 in the series with Game 4 in Brampton tonight, the pressure is squarely on the Excelsiors, who have represented the East in the Mann Clip the past three years. "They arc the experienced club, they are the older club, so really they arc the team that's supposed to win," says Vipond, coyly trying to deflect any mounting tension away from his club and on to the Excelsiors. "The pressure's on them." Forget that Brooklin finished first during the regular season, while the I Excelsiors were third. Forget that Brooklin is 0-3 in three trips to Brampton this season, including including a 12-7 setback in Game 2, and must win there at least once in order to win this scries and earn the right to host the Mann Cup. The pressure's on Brampton, or so Vipond wants his team to believe, so they can play with, and recover, loose balls in Game 4 and beyond. In general terms, this series pits Brampton's experience against Brook- lin's youth and,- after losing in six games in last year's playoffs to the Excelsiors, Excelsiors, Vipond believes his club is narrowing the gap. "Seventeen of them (Brampton players) have been together for seven years, you know, their average age is probably five years older than us. They've been to championships at this level, we really haven't," says Vipond. But after watching his Redmen turn in a solid - not exceptional - defensive effort Monday, Vipond says his club has to match strides with the Excelsiors Excelsiors in all aspects of the game in order to turn the series around. "Basically they arc a nuts and holts team. They don't do anything fancy,' they've got great slicks, they've got good size, they run well and they check well. Basically that's what we have to do. We have to compete for every loose ball." REDMEN RANT: Gavin Front continues to assert himself in the playoffs, playoffs, scoring two markers and adding three assists to lead the Brooklin offence. offence. Nick Trudeau matched Front's output, while Ken Millin and Steve Toll added two goals and an assist each.
