THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, SEPTEMBER 20,2000 PAGE 7 Region employee, two-time t 'hero' admits sex attacks on 12 girls BY STEPHEN SHAW Staff Writer > A longtime regional employee, J and prior recipient of two police civilian civilian citations, has admitted sexually molesting a dozen young girls over a 25-year period. Alfred Borg, 51, of Maplewood Drive in Oshawa, pleaded guilty Wednesday to five counts of sexual assault, five counts of indecent assault assault on a female, two counts of sexual sexual interference and one count of com- i mon assault. Crown attorney Ken Policy told the court most of the offences in- volved sexual touching and groping, although some of the victims were violated violated more intrusively. The victims were between the ages of five and 18 years. The assaults took place between 1974 and 1999 at homes in Oshawa and Whitby, in a parked van and dur- t ing private tours of the Corbett Creek ' ' Water Pollution Control Centre on ' Forbes Street in Whitby, where Mr. Borg had worked as a plant operator , 1 up until his arrest in May. Mr. Borg, who has been in custody t since his arrest, will be sentenced by Ontario Court Justice John Payne at Oshawa's King Street East courthouse courthouse Sept. 27. Mr. Borg, once praised by police for his "courage" in helping catch a fleeing sex attacker, was originally arrested in May by sex-assault squad detectives investigating separate re- '. ports of recent attacks on three •: teenaged girls. In the wake of newspapers stories, J police were quickly flooded with complaints from other victims of Mr. Borg. I "The has media played a very ; helpful role in the case... It's been so 1 long for some of these victims there is a sense of relief now that they have finally finally come forward," Detective Con- " stable Deb Rutherford said in an in- r ' terview. "I'm glad it'll be over soon, for the sake of the victims, so they can move f on with their lives and begin healing. ' ' Some of them have been carrying II ' around this heavy burden and secret " ■ for years and years," she said. Court was told Mr. Borg befriend- : !' ed his victims and established their - trust before he sexually abused them. ' : "These weren't strangers. He met most of the victims through mutual ' • acquaintances and then assaulted them after gaining their trust," Sergeant Jim Griepsma, a police spokesman, said following Mr. Borg's earlier arrest. Few were more surprised by the charges than police, who twice in the past have hailed Mr. Borg a "hero." In 1974, Mr. Borg received a civil- ian citation from Durham Regional ' Police after foiling an armed robbery 1 1 and assisting in the capture of two ; suspects in Whitby. ' 1 In 1996, he received a second citation citation for chasing down a fleeing suspect suspect wanted for sexually assaulting ' three teenaged girls in downtown Os- ■ -l hawa.
