"This is a very exciting opportunity for young people in our province," says Margaret Marland, minister responsible for children. She will be working with youth council members, healing what they have to say and then representing them at the cabinet table. The council will advise her on issues that interest the province's young people, and will provide youth with an opportunity opportunity to leant about government and civic involvement. The council will be composed of 14 to 17 high school-aged students, and the selection will be based on age, academic achievement, extracunicular activities, community involvement, and proposals that describe how their contribution as Violence prevention grant of over $8000 to Bethesda House Bethesda House in BowmanVille received received some much-needed funding recently. recently. The Canadian Women's Foundation and The Traders Challenge awarded grants to 17 shelters for assaulted women across Canada worth a total of $121,175. Bethesda House in Bow- manville, was awarded an aits grant of $8,855. Each participant will be able to create ait that expresses her thoughts and feelings feelings on abuse. The objective is to provide provide a forum for 40 teenage girls to leam aspects of prevention of abuse through information, discussions and a creative hands-on component. The artwork artwork will form a mural which will be put on display. There will be one session in which the public may go and view the mural. The CWF is Canada's only national public foundation dedicated to improving improving the lives of women and girls. "Violence against women is a huge problem, as we have seen once again in recent events," said Rishma Mirshahi, CWF board vice president. The projects funded include many intended intended to educate teens about how to build healthy relationships and involve them in local violence prevention efforts as well as several which involve older | women who are experiencing abuse. council members will benefit the province, and their home communities. Applications for the Youth Council will be available Sept. 29 at all Ontario public and private secondary schools, and alternative schools offering secondary secondary school-level training or academic courses. Applications are already available available at the website www.childsec.gov.on.ca. Tire applications must be submitted to the Ontario Children's Secretariat no later than Oct. 27. Applicants chosen will be asked to sit on the council for a one-year period, from September through June, to coincide with tire regular regular school year. ■ The meetings will be held on weekends weekends between September and May, four- times in the course of the year. One of tire meetings will be held outside of Toronto, and it may involve applicants who weren't chosen. The first meeting is expected to be in November. To be eligible to attend meetings, youth under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian travel with them to and from tire meetings. Council members and their chaperones chaperones will be reimbursed for all reasonable reasonable expenses such as travel, meals and accommodation.- "Young people make a very important important contribution to the life of all our communities. Youth involvement and participation in every facet of our society is valued and needed, and I look forward to working with the Council members at Queen's Park," says Ms. Marland.
