Walk a dog for a good cause on Saturday BY JACQUIE McINNES Staff Writer | CLARINGTON - Leroy is more than just a pretty face, although his good looks and charm are definitely the first things you'll notice about him. ! The four-month old black Labrador is destined to leave his Newcastle foster family one day to train to be the eyes or maybe even the ears for someone who needs him as part of the Lions Foundation Foundation of Canada Dog Guide Program. This Saturday, Oct. 7, the community is invited to join a walk-a-dog-a-thon hosted by the Newcastle Lion's Club to' raise money for the program which provides provides dog guides to Canadians with Visual, Visual, hearing and medical or physical disabilities. disabilities. ; "I want to invite everyone to join in our walk this year," says Jean Graham, the local walk organizer. "Young or old, with or without a dog, everyone is welcome," welcome," she says. 1; Mrs. Graham is Leroy's foster mom. Fostering puppies and preparing them for the training they will begin when they are just over a year old, is a labour of love for the Newcastle resident. ! Mrs. Graham was initially screened through the Oakville-based foundation to see if she would qualify for this important important job. ;• "You fill out an application, and provide provide references and there are seminars in Qakville where they go over what they expect die dog to do," she relates. Once the puppy comes home, it will be assessed assessed every two montiis by a visitor from the foundation. Leroy recently had his own two- montii assessment and so far so good, says Mrs. Graham. "He's well socialized. He's good on the street. He's not afraid of traffic," she says proudly. "Leroy's been in stores. He really loves the dress department. He loves getting under the dresses." When out and about, Mrs. Graham says, "I make him behave just as you would a child." Training a dog guide pup is a seven-day-a-week, "from the moment you get out of bed in the morning morning to the moment you go to bed at night" job. It requires a family with a lot of time to devote to the dog. But die reward reward of training the pup to become a lifelong helpmate makes it all worthwhile, worthwhile, she adds.
