Bowmanville Bowmanville won 4-1. Bowmanville Eagles make trades without losing any players BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor It's hard to tell the players without a program. And even then it can be very confusing. Sunday night for example, a rarity in sports occurred when the same player was listed as playing for two opposing teams. Defenceman Chad Elliott gets the distinction of being listed as playing for both the Bowmanville Eagles and Cobourg Cougars. Of course, the 16-year-old was traded to Bowmanville earlier this season season from Cobourg, but his name and number was still listed listed on Cobourg's roster for Sunday's Sunday's game at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. While his name and number (24) remain the same, Bowmanville Bowmanville may want to investigate investigate how Elliott lost an inch in height since being traded. With Cobourg he was listed at six- feet, while Bowmanville has the Oshawa Generals draft pick listed at five-fcet-elcven. Such is life in the Provincial Junior Hockey League, where players are constantly changing teams. In fact, the Eagles added two new players to the roster See PAIR page B2 SALE PRICES END SUN., NOV. 12, OR WHERE SEARS IS CLOSED, SAT., NOV. 11,2000, WHILE QUANTITIES LAST Fast start leads to 4-1 victory over Cobourg Four in a row for Eagles BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor Suddenly the tides have changed for the Bowmanville Eagles. Just when the team couldn't seem to win, now over the last four games, it ! can't lose. Sunday night at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, Andrew Smale scored twice to lead Bowmanville to a 4-1 victory over the Cobourg Cougars in Provincial Junior Hockey League play. It was the second victory of the weekend weekend for Bowmanville, who picked up a .5-2 win in Peterborough Saturday aftermoon. aftermoon. The win extends Bowmanville's win- "ning streak to four games, which comes on the heels of an ugly eight game winless winless süeak the team endured in October. The current streak keeps Bowmanville Bowmanville in third place in the East Conference Conference with a record of 10-84. The sudden turn-around in fortune has a lot to do with the hockey club coming coming closer together as a group, says Smale, who fired his ninth and tenth goals of the season on Sunday. "We've come together as a team. We had some team outings'together (recently) (recently) and that's what helped us get out of the winless streak." Bowmanville coupled team unity with another fast start for Sunday's win, scoring three times in the first period for an,early lead. Smale opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the period followed by power play goals from Jay Meden- waldt and Jason McAuley. In the third period, trailing 3- 0, Cobourg pulled goal- tender Chris Hardill for a six- on-four advantage with 3:28 remaining after Bowmanville's Bowmanville's Billy Burgio was given a minor penalty for roughing. The move worked and backfired at the same time. Smale scored his second of the night shorthanded and into the empty net under a minute into tire penalty for a 4- 0 lead. Cobourg did manage to get a goal on the power play 28 seconds later with 1:46 left in the game by Brandon Merkowsky to spoil what would have been Bowmanville Bowmanville goaltender Rick Mamon's second shutout of the season. Marnon blanked Wellington on Oct. 24 when the teams played to a scoreless scoreless tie. The win over Cobourg exacted exacted a little revenge for Bowmanville. In an earlier meeting this season at the Recreation Complex, Cobourg got out to an early lead and won 5-2. "So many games aie won or lost in the first 10 minutes of the first period. We came out hungry tonight," said Bowmanville coach Curtis Hodgins in regards to his team scoring three times in the opening period. "The last time (at the Recreation Complex) against Cobourg we stalled off slow and couldn't catch up. We wanted to pay them back for that." OHL scoring record still stands f, BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor It's one of those amazing records in sport that leaves one wondering - will it ever be broken? Like Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting hitting streak, Nolan Ryan's 5,714 strikeouts strikeouts or Glenn Hall's 502 straight NHL starts in goal, Tony Tanti put up numbers numbers in the Ontario Hockey League which may never be surpassed. As a rookie with the Oshawa Generals Generals in 1980, Tanti scored a phenomenal 81 goals. To put that number in perspective, last season six rookies with the Generals combined to score 27 goals. The leading rookie goalscorer in the entire league last season was Tomas Kurka of Plymouth, who scored 36 goals, just 44 per cent of Tanti's eyepopping eyepopping total, Tanti, who returned to Oshawa recently recently for the first time since graduating from tire Generals 18 years ago, was one of the most prolific goal scorers in OHL history, firing 177 goals in just 154 games, Not bad for a fourth-round OHL pick. That's not a typo - Tanti was, and we're not really going out on a limb here, the highest scoring fourth-rounder in OHL history. So exactly how did he do it? He came to Oshawa physically ready to play and with a tremendous amount of motivation. "I was very disappointed, I was rated very highly in tire draft and at that time I was 165 pounds and over the summer I went up to 185 pounds. I was really upset that I got drafted in the fourth round, I wanted to prove everybody wrong and that just drove me to the best that I could." Playing on a team which featured other junior standouts standouts such as Mitch Lam- oureux, Norm Schmidt, Joe Cirella and Dave Andreychuk, Andreychuk, Tanti was especially effective effective on the power-play, scoring 37 times with the man advantage, another OHL record he still holds. Tanti, now 37, left the Generals and turned into a solid NHL goal producer, topping the 40-goal mark three times and notching 39 on two otiler occasions en route to 287 goals in a 10- year career, spent mostly with the Vancouver Canucks. Married, with two children children and now Jiving in Vancouver, Vancouver, Tanti returned to Oshawa Oshawa to watch family friend Mike Henderson of the Barrie Barrie Colts in a game against the Generals. After playing in Europe for six seasons, Tanti retired in 1998, has tried one business business venture and expects to start another business with former Canuck Dave Babych.
