.4 MADD kicks off Durham chapter 19 alcohol-related deaths in Durham so far this year BY LEE BAILIE Special to The Statesman The newly minted Durham chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving wants to change the meaning of 'tying one on' this holiday season. Durham College hosted the ribbon cutting ceremony for MADD's Project Red Ribbon-Tie One on for Safety Safety campaign, and the message message being sent was clear. Connie Heron, victim services services board member of MADD Durham and sister of president Nancy Codlin, lost her daughter Amanda when she was killed in a drunk driving accident in 1998. She asked the public to, "please consider the horrific results of drinking and driving." driving." Ms. Heron's words had a strong impact on some of those in attendance. "It puts a face on the issue. It made me feel like taking up the cause," ' said Sylvia Pelham, an Office Administration teacher at Durham. The most important objectives objectives of this campaign are, "to stop drinking and driving and to support the victims," said Ms.Codlin, president of the new Durham chapter of MADD. "Each of us wearing a ribbon ribbon must go out as disciples against drinking and driving," driving," said Durham MPP John O'Toole. The executive of Durham chapter of MADD was formed on Oct. 26, in response response to residents' growing concerns about the number of impaired driving accidents during the spring and summer summer of 2000, according to a press release. . "There have been 19 deaths in Durham this year related to vehicular fatalities involving alcohol," said James Foster, vice-president of the Durham chapter of MADD. According to MADD's press release, on average 4.5 Canadians aie killed and more than 125 are injured every day due to alcohol alcohol related crashes. MADD encourages people people to tie a red ribbon to their vehicle's antenna, side, mirror mirror or other visible area, in order to promote awareness of drinking and driving.
