THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, DECEMBER 13,2000 PAGE B3 Generals down Guelph 4-1 Strong all-around effort translates into win BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor This must have been the kind of win George Burnett envisions for his team on a more consistent basis. The Osliawa Generals beat the Guelph Storm 4-1 Sunday at the Civic Auditorium in a game which featured prominent performances performances by all aspects of his lineup. The offence was dominated by the line of rookie Brandon Nolan, sophomore Mike Rice and third-year veteran John Ko- zoriz, which accounted for all the goal-scoring by the home side. In goal, Derek Dolson was particularly sharp, losing his shutout bid at 8:19 of the third period and winding up with 30 saves. Special teams were actually special, with the power-play clicking on three-of-four opportunities, opportunities, while the penalty killing unit successfully nullified Guelph's four chances. Still, these kinds of efforts are few and far between for the Generals, Generals, who snapped off a six- game winless skid with the victory. victory. Osliawa entered Sunday's game after back-to-back losses on the weekend, 7-4 in Belleville Saturday and an 8-0 whitewash by the Storm in Guelph Friday. But the Generals rebounded in the return match witlMhe Storm, outworking Guelph and parlaying a two-goal effort by Rice and three-point nights from Nolan and Kozoriz (a goal and two assists each) into their seventh seventh victory of the season. "I think it's a real big win, these guys kind of thumped us pretty good on Friday," says Rice, acquired from Brampton in a trade earlier this season. "We kind of made a point of it to get revenge on them to let them know we're not the kind of team dial will roll over." Osliawa, now 7-19-4-1 on the season, has 19 points, nine back ofbodi Peterborough and Barrie, the teams which own the final two playoff berths in the Eastern Conference. The Generals, who have made the playoffs 23 straight seasons, have 37 games left in the regular season to make a bid at extending that streak. They'll get a crack at narrowing narrowing the gap on the Colts when they travel to Barrie Thursday. "Barrie's going through a similar stretch as we are right now, without a lot of wins and that's a game we have to win to get a little bit closer to them and whether it's them or Peterborough Peterborough or North Bay or whoever the team is we're going to pass, they're one of the team's directly ahead of us, so we have to beat the teams that are within sight," says Burnett. GENERALLY SPEAKING: SPEAKING: Sunday's game was the annual Teddy Bear Toss and the GEORGE BURNETT Civic Auditorium crowd of 2,391 threw 1,709 bears and stuffed animals on the ice following following John Kozoriz' goal at 2:21 of the second period. The stuffed animals will be distributed distributed to local charities, including the Durham Regional Police Food and Toy Drive and Grandview Grandview Children's Centre... Injury update: Paul Ranger remains out indefinitely, Pat Montgomery Montgomery and Lindsay Plunkett could be back in action for this weekend's games, but the situation situation on -defenceman Mike Rusenstrom is unclear. Originally Originally thought to have a concussion, concussion, Burnett now says doctors believe he could have migraine problems. Who cares if he's doing it for money? Why did you go to work today, for fun? And don't forget this, Lemieux got burned for a lot of money because his contracts called for deferred payments. He didn't want to own the Pittsburgh Penguins, but if he ever hoped to see the money that was rightfully his, he had to get involved in ownership. So if coming out of retirement is his way of saving the Penguins - for the third time - then so be it. All I know is this: He is one of the most, if not the most, gifted player who ever played the game. And at age 35, it is conceivable that Lemieux could produce at a high level for a few more years. This is a guy who scored a remarkable 2.05 points per game through his illustrious 13-year career. That's from 613 goals and 1,494 points in 745 games. I think you would be hard- pressed to find anybody who would disagree that Lemieux quit too soon. Poor health and a mounting frustration with the way the game was catering to slugs at the COMPLETE AUTO REPAIRS expense of skilled players caused him to walk away from the sport at age 31. How good was he when he took his sabbatical? Not as good as he was in his prime when he scored 85 goals and 199 points in 76 games in 1988-89, but good enough to win the scoring title. The Penguins, as an organization, were going down the toilet when they drafted Lemieux first overall in 1994. Credit him with his first save. And they were in bankruptcy when he put together a group to buy the team a few years ago. Save No. 2. Now, with the Penguins underachiev i n g and superstar Jaromir Jagr slumping and pouting, it's Super Mario to the rescue once again. How good can he be? Perhaps not as good as Michael Jordan, who led the Chicago Bulls to three NBA titles after coming back from a feeble attempt to play pro baseball. But certainly better than Gordie Howe and Guy Lafleur who made comebacks after being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. No matter what Lemieux's motivation is, you, the fan, are the big winner. So just sit back and enjoy it. (Mike Brophy is senior writer for The Hockey News.)
