i PAGE B2THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, DECEMBER 20,2000 Record of 7-21-5-1 places team 19th out of 20 teams in OHL Generals enter break 10 points out of playoffs BY BRIAN LEGREE Sports Editor If nothing else, the Oshawa Generals Generals can at least lay claim to dominating the Ottawa 67's thus far this season. In a highly forgettable first-half of the Ontario Hockey League year, one in which the Generals have won just seven times in 34 games, Oshawa remained remained unbeaten against Ottawa, scoring scoring a 3-3 tie Sunday. In three meetings with the 67's this year, Oshawa has two wins and a tie and certainly deserved to win Sunday's Sunday's match, outshooting Ottawa 40- 32 and ringing a couple of shots off a post and a crossbar. Over the final two periods and overtime, Oshawa was particularly dominant, outshooting Ottawa Ottawa 31-16. It was a strong effort from a team missing several front-line regulars, including including forwards Brandon Cullen (shoulder), Brandon Nolan (knee), Lindsay Plunkett (shoulder), Vladimir Repnev (in Russia), Mike Rusenstrom (head) and Paul Ranger (wrist). To add insulting injury to injury, Generals also saw veteran centre John Kozoriz go down with a facial injury after teammate Brad Woods rung a clearing attempt off his head. So the Generals enter the Christmas break in 19th place out of the 20 teams in the OHL, with a 7-21-5-1 record. - "Am I happy that we're 14 games under .500? No. Did I think we'd be 14 games over (.500)? No," says George Burnett, Oshawa's coach and general manager. "It's frustrating for everybody. I think we're a better club than our record indicates, but I think when you see the types of effort you saw tonight (Sunday), I don't know that anybody can leave the rink feeling they were cheated on the dollar they spent to get here." Miraculously, despite' Oshawa's abysmal record, the Generals are just 10 points out of a playoff position. With the injuries mounting and the trade deadline approaching, Burnett is weighing whether to deal some veterans veterans or hang on to his nucleus, look for a quick return to health and hope his club can mount a playoff charge. The trade deadline is Jan. 10, but Burnett has indicated he'd like to make GEORGE BURNETT 'Am I happy that we're 14 games under .500? No. Did I think we'd be 14 games over (.500)? No.' any personnel decisions prior to Christmas. "I've got 19 friends (the other general general managers), they all have the answers answers for me. It's amazing when you're struggling everybody likes your players and wants to move you the answers answers for your, I guess, lack of success," success," says Burnett. "If we make changes, it's going to be for younger, talented players. It's not going to be a lot of draft choices. I think we have a commitment and an obligation to our fans to remain competitive competitive and I believe we are a competitive competitive hockey club despite our injuries. "I don't think there have been too many nights when we haven't competed competed hard. I think if we make changes, they need to be changes that are not only going to help us to continue to be competitive this year and exciting to watch, but also (are for) the big picture, picture, which is the next two or three years."
