"Every year, Ontario's volunteers give hundreds of millions of hours of their time to thousands of organizations," said Helen Johns, minister of citizenship, citizenship, culture and recreation, recreation, in a news release. "Those hours add up to the equivalent of 220,000 fulltime fulltime jobs or four per cent of our labour force. The service awards honour honour individual volunteers for continuous years of service to a single organization. organization. Community groups can nominate up to six people each year. Youth volunteers, ages 24 and under, are recognized for two or more years of service, service, while adults are recognized recognized for five to 30 years of volunteerism. In 2001, the government will also honour citizens who have given 50 or more years of service in their communities. Award winners winners receive stylized pins and personalized certificates. certificates. The government is also receiving nominations for the Outstanding Achievement Achievement Awards for Volunteerism, Volunteerism, which honour volunteers of an outstanding outstanding calibre rather than for years of service. Twenty recipients recipients are selected annually by a committee of individuals individuals from across the province.
