HWY #2 COURTICE (905) 434-8111 John Robert (Jack) Chislett John Robert (Jack) Chislett, died peacefully on Sunday December 24, 2000 at Lakeridge Health, Bowmanville, Ontario leaving family and friends with memories ol an exceptional man. Jack was born to Claude and Edith (Howard) Chislett on January 29, 1915 in Port Hope, Ontario. Educated in Port Hope and at the University of Toronto, he enlisted with the RCAF in June 1940 and was posted as a navigator navigator with the elite 156 Squadron of the RAF Pathfinder Force until his discharge as squadron squadron leader in September 1945. He saw service service in action including two tours of duty totalling totalling some sixty-six missions over enemy territory, he was decorated with the Distinguished Distinguished Flying Cross and received the Operational Operational Wing and two Service Bars. Following a stint as a civilian navigator with Trans Canada Airlines in Montreal, Jack returned returned to London to establish the Pathfinders Pathfinders Club and recruit British Aircrew for a US airlift ferrying war supplies to Korea. This eventually led to a thirty-live year career as navigator with American Charter companies out of Los Angeles and San Francisco, California California during which time he also developed a sideline business marketing rebuilt periscopic sextants to the air transport industry. From constant overseas travel Jack gathered a collection of friends around the Pacific along with an eclectic mix of shells, carvings and artifacts. These were to be the only possessions possessions which he considered of any material significance. By the time of. his retirement in 1980, Jack was one of. only a handful of civilian civilian navigators still flying.. His career had spanned the evolution and demise of commercial commercial air navigation as a distinct profession. Retirement brought Jack home to Canada and eventually to Newcastle, Ontario where he became one of the pioneer residents at Wilmot Creek Retirement Village. Here his reserve and unassuming lifestyle belied his previous world travels, but his quick and laconic laconic wit revealed his as a 'one ol a kind' individual individual possessed of an uncommon intellect. He devoted a long latent artistic talent to writing and illustrating poems and tables ol child-like simplicity expressing his offbeat humour. Predeceased by his sister Grace and brother Howard, Jack will be lovingly remembered by his sister Betty Lockhart (Lloyd Dearing) his cousin George Haggis (Octavia) his former wife Lois (Giordanino) Chislett and adopted daughters Vandra Solomon (Steve), Carol Rae Chislett, his son John Chislett (Kelly), and his daughter Joan Elizabeth Arons, and his former wife Mrs. Helen (Stapleton) Groome. He is survived by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. The family wishes to express appreciation to Nelson Cochrane and to the stall at Fosterbrook Fosterbrook Long Term Care facility in Newcastle for the friendship, care and respect they gave Jack during his stay. A gathering of friends and family will be' held at a future date to commemorate Jack's time with us.
