GROEN/ Statesman photo Doit Wctlclutck from Kevin Martin's Edmonton rink curling tournament held in Oshawa this past week- lets a shot go during the M&M Meat Shops Skins end. Sldns format attracts top rinks Hamilton curler cashes in BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer There were no real losers after the M&M Meat Shops Skins title match Sunday at the Oshawa Oshawa Golf Club. While Kevin Martin's Edmonton rink left with the trophy after downing Peter Corner's Hamilton team in the final, Corner walked away with more cash from a weekend that showcased eight of the country's top curling tpams for some 75Q fans. Martin ,\von the championship championship game $18,200 to $16,800, clinching it by taking a $4,200 skin in the sixth end, but it was Corner Corner who took home the most cash from the weekend, weekend, earning $28,800 to Martin's $26,400. "It doesn't mean we won the skins because we lost the game," Corner conceded afterward. "We really wanted to win the bonspiel. That was our goal, but second place with the money we won wasn't too bad." Martin, a two-time Canadian champ and 1999 Skins winner, struggled through his first two matches - wins over Allan Lyburn in the western quarterfinal and Jeff Stoughton in the semis - but put everything together together in the final. When asked what brought about the change, he said, "No idea. "I really enjoy skins games," added Martin. "I guess I came out with the right frame of mind - to have some fun with the crowd, which we did. I just fell belter for some reason, just felt ready to g °" The skins format is designed designed to generate offence, offence, as the team with the hammer needs to take at least two points to win the cash and the leant without the hammer must steal at least one. Money not claimed carries over to the next end. It made for a number of impressive shots throughout throughout the weekend, especially especially from Corner, who stormed back for a win over defending champ Wayne Middaugh in the quarterfinal and destroyed Glenn Howard in the semis. "I thought I made a lot of good pressure shots for the guys," said Corner, who has family in Oshawa and had strong support from the crowd. "I'm glad the fans had a good time because it means a lot to us to put on a good show." Scott Foster, lead curler for Corner's team, also brought cheers from the stands. The former Oshawa Oshawa resident started his curling career in Oshawa at six and had a bleacher full of supporters for Sunday's Sunday's final. "The fans .were just tremendous," said Foster, now a 27-year-old ice technician in Oakville. "It was just an overwhelming feeling having those guys up in the stands cheering." But Martin's rink was simply too much for Corner's Corner's team in the final. He won $1,400 in the first end, but took control with a $12,600 purse in the fifth end, which included included carryover money from the previous two ends. He then clinched the win with a steal in the sixth end. "I think it was a good team effort," Martin said. "Earlier on, the guys were kind of carrying me through, but I think all four of us played well in the final." < o D Û Full Range of Mutual Funds*at all branches The RRSP season is upon us.
