The four individuals and one team to be enshrined in May have strong connections to the local sports scene at a grassroots level, a bit of a departure departure from previous years when at least one inductee starred on the national or international international stage. Ivan Locke, Don Mcll- veen, Tom O'Connor, Joe Pi- ontek and the 1953 Oshawa McCalium Transporters baseball baseball team were introduced as the newest inductees prior to Monday's council meeting at Oshawa City Hall. "I think we've seen since the early years a lot people, like the Bobby Orrs who came to Oshawa and then moved on, they were selected because they were easy choices," says Ron Wright, head of the selection committee. committee. O'Connor, who played for the McCalium squad, joins a select group of people who have been inducted both as an individual and as part of a team - and in the same year no less. O'Connor didn't hesitate when asked to recall a particularly particularly fond memory. After all, the former Oshawa General was a right wing for the Whit by Dunlops hockey team that won a world championship in 1958. Piontek was a teammate of O'Connor on the Gale Lumber softball team, but his influence on that sport extended extended well beyond. Spanning three decades from the 1950s to the 1970s, Piontek played or coached for 10 provincial championship teams and was a member of the 1956 Tony's fastball team that finished third at the world championships. Mcllveen, a teacher at Central Collegiate from 1950 to 1981, was inducted as a builder for his work as a coach in numerous sports botli during and well after his retirement. Locke was inducted as a builder in hockey, where, as an official and supervisor for 50 years, he lias dedicated his time to upholding and upgrading upgrading the rules of play. Of his many highlights, Locke points especially to working as a linesman for the 1955 OHA championship, when Billy Harris led the Toronto Marlies to a 2-1 win over St. Catharines. This year's induction ceremony ceremony and dinner is Wednesday, Wednesday, May 30, at the Civic Auditorium. Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased purchased for $50 (a $25 tax receipt receipt will be issued) by calling calling Barb Loreno at 725-5431. 1 results!
