My Doctor has recommended Physiotherapy. How can Physiotherapy help? Telma Grant, R.P.T. The research shows that an active program of Physiotherapy may be the key for you. Fifty nine patients were divided into two groups: The first did an active Physiotherapy Program of exercises versus the second group which received massage and heat therapy for twelve weeks. The group of patients who | did the active physiotherapy reported less pain with improved function in activities of daily living at the six month and even at the one- year follow-up. Also important, the back strength of the active group was much improved compared to the other group. Your doctor is right. A program of Physiotherapy with active exercises may be just what your back is asking for. See Your Physiotherapist! Research supports Active Physiotherapy for Chronic Low back pain patients. Why does the paint colour look different on my walls than it does on the colour chip? Doug Abernathy A small paint receives almost 100 percent light reflection, on the wall it will receive about 50 percent light reflection, causing the colour to appear darker (or stronger.) Always view colour chips in your home, during both daylight and evening hours before making a selection. Remember too that the warm colour spectrum (yellows, pinks, oranges) are known as "advancing" colours, and will appear much stronger than you think. The cool colours (blues, greens, grays) are known as "receding" colours and are easier to judge. Abernethy's Paint and Wallpaper 55 King Street West, Bowmanville 623-5431 When should I have my jewellery • appraised? A The most frequent • reason for appraisal is for insurance purposes. After years of accumulating a substantial amount of jewellery it is best to update with your insurance agent. Another common request is for the settlement of estates. We would be pleased to assist you with your appraisal. Plan to attend our upcoming Appraisal Clinic on Saturday April 21st, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment. Ron Hooper oopers Jewellers Ltd. A Young people.make up only 5% of the driving population, • yet they account for 10% of traffic fatalities. Education is the key to helping your young driver get off on the right foot. Many young drivers never think an accident will happen to them. The reality is that each year, one in seven drivers in North America will have an accident, and one in about 3000 will be killed. The easy to reduce these numbers is to teach new drivers how to drive safely. This education will also impact their auto insurance rates. Help them choose a driver education course and warn them about the illegality and dangers of drinking and driving. One of the main costs of driving is auto insurance. It is a good idea to shop around. At the Cooperators we have created a Safe Driving Reward Program. The program is based on the premise that safe driving behavior should be encouraged and recognized. It is a four year partnership with young drivers. The young driver is rewarded in the fourth year by a significant reduction in their premium. We believe the program provides additional incentive to young people to drive safely. Os the co-opeiâtoià A Better Place For You- 102 King St. E., Bbwmanville 697-2262 Laura Sciore ANC. GLU, CFP >"■>. Funeral Services CL What is the purpose of a visitation or wake? Paul Morris A When you have a "visitation" or "wake", or • what some refer to as "calling hours", you permit family and friends to express their feelings about the deceased. This sharing experience can be important to you in your grief. When you are with others, you will find comfort and enlightenment. You and others should be able to express your own emotions. At the same time, It is helpful for you to hear what the life pf the deceased has meant to others, some of whom you may not even know. The visitation in the presence of the viewable body provides a proper setting « and climate for these expressions. There are some people who suggest other approaches or even elimination of this . custom. However, nothing has proven to be as meaningful. In fact, some alternatives are totally lacking in those elements which experience and research have shown to be helpful to normal recovery from the loss a death creates. A Ahhl I liked playing with the drill since I was threelil NO, • please do not believe that reply which I am often offered by 'unconverted dentophoblcs'. Actually, the decision to be a dentist was not an easy one. My family arrived in Canada when I was only ten. My father supported our family of six, single-handedly by driving taxi service in Toronto streets, night or day, whenever he could. Needless to say, the Chia kids were taught very early the ideals of hard work, responsibility, and importance of education. With a good education, become a professional, only then can you strive to be independent and do the things you like to do, my father stressed to his young students. I enrolled in university to attain a dental degree to practise the gifts my devoted parents taught me and allow me to serve the less fortunate (or in pain) and similarly, those who desire the highest level of care. Now, in my family practice, I'm fulfilling my wish to provide the essential service patients want and be rewardèd In return, remarkably with beautiful SMILES of individuals, from all walks of life. Dentistry has become ever more sophisticated and challenging, and I hope to deliver my new skills and 'old' knowledge to everyone of my patients so we may all benefit from this 'road much travelled'." Due to the isometric contractions used to hold every pose, you tone all the major muscles. As your muscle tone increases, it raises your • metabolic rate and your body burns more calories throughout the day. Therefore, you will experience a steady, healthy weight loss. Yoga also provides additional benefits in terms of stress reduction, increased flexibility, increased energy and vitality as well as the many spiritual benefits.
