PAGE 4THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, APRIL 25,2001 Without regional funding cancer centre goes back to drawing board: officials WITHOUT from page 1 RVHS, which includes the Ajax and Pickering Health Centre, and Lakeridge Health Corporation. Those plans include the Durham Regional Regional Cancer Centre at the Lakeridge Buffaloed in Bowmanville BUFFALOED from page I There's a buffalo in the parking lot." Not very likely, thought the Bowmanville Bowmanville resident, who was talking to another customer at the time. But, when other people in the store started checking checking out the situation, he looked outside. "And sure enough, there was literally literally a buffalo running around the parking lot," relates Mr. Hyson. The buffalo's owner, Brian Hart, says the beast, not quite two years old, escaped its enclosure, south of Taunton Road on Green Road. It was tracked to a ravine north of Bowmanville's theatres, theatres, at Hwy. 2 and Green Road. "We tried to move it, and it ran toward the lights" of the nearby plaza, says Mr. Hart. Though the animal eventually made its own way back to the enclosure, it soon escaped again, and spent much of its time in the ravine near the the.- atres. Sunday, in the plaza parking lot, the female buffalo scampered around, skirting skirting customers' parked cars, though vehicles vehicles appeared to have escaped unscathed, unscathed, reports Mr. Hyson. But its size left quite an impression on witnesses. "When it was mnning, you could feel it on the ground," notes the Jumbo staffer. And was it fast? "Big time," says Mr. Hyson. "I couldn't believe how fast it actually was for its size." Suddenly, after about five minutes, the seemingly "disoriented" beast turned tail and headed for the highway, recalls Mr. Hyson. That's where police pick up the trail. According to police communication centre records, at least three witnesses called police to report the wayward animal. animal. Drivers on Hwy. 2, where the buffalo buffalo was moving westward in the east- bound lanes, had to cautiously navigate their way around the creature. A Durham Regional Police sergeant and three officers were called to the scene, and they in turn called a veterinarian. But, according to police records, the vet had mn out of tranquilizer darts, and couldn't help. "It went to the ravine a mile north of the theatres," says Mr. Hart, who had a party of about six searching for the animal. Then, Tuesday morning, the trail got warmer, and the animal was found roaming around Nash Road, between Maple Grove and Holt roads. The beast came "real close" to Vince Visconti's Nash Road home, and was just walking around slowly. Soon, it made its way across Nash, to the area behind Andrea Hamilton's home, where it was eventually tranquilized by a veterinarian, veterinarian, captured and loaded into a livestock trailer. "Shocked," is how Ms. Hamilton described described her reaction to finding out the buffalo was so near. "I just wish my kids were here. They'd just be amazed," says Ms. Hamilton, who says the buffalo buffalo did absolutely no damage to her property. The footloose buffalo is now heading heading for Manitoba, where it will join a herd of others, as breeding stock. Health Oshawa site and hospital officials are maintaining that project "cannot proceed proceed independent of other expansion plans". Brian Lemon, chief executive officer officer of Lakeridge Health, explained while the cancer centre would house out patient treatment facilities for radiation therapy, any lab work. X-rays and surgeries surgeries would be accommodated in the main hospital building at the Oshawa site. "That's why the Health Services Re structuring Commission ordered the hospital hospital be redeveloped (and a cancer centre be added on)," Mr. Lemon said, noting while any funding from the Region would help, "we have to get enough to make the whole project go." Mr. Lemon noted if Durham comes through with funding, construction on the cancer centre centre will likely get under way tills year. But, if Durham doesn't contribute , Mr. Lemon said officials will have "to go back to the drawing board". «HangatonM.r' (•M) «1*1*18 1414 KINO ST. kieoe) 434-3368„ Please visit our website at www.sleepfaetory.com Remember, we are the factory.
