/ PAGE 12THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 2,2001 OHL annual draft goes online for the first time BY BRIAN LEGREE Stuff Editor There will be plenty of circumstance, but no primp, when the Ontario Hockey League holds its annual draft this Saturday. Saturday. In the past, the OHL has held a gala draft at one of its member rinks, with a full house of draft prospects and their families and friends. The media came out in full force, first-round picks were called up to the stage, put on a team jersey jersey and hat and dealt with an assault of cameras and microphones. But that all changes this year. The OHL will conduct its entire May 5 draft by mouse click, as the draft goes online via the Internet. The Internet draft will save the OHL plenty of money, but will rob the top prospects of their moment in the sun. While Don Cherry correctly advises non-first-round prospects to stay away from drafts in order to avoid disappointment, disappointment, for the top-level players, the draft day excitement is a small reward for years of sweat and toil. One of those prospects enduring the change is Oshawa's Ryan Rorabeck. The Grade 10 student at Paul Dwyer High School is rated as a likely first- round pick and concedes the change to an Internet draft is a tad frustrating. "I am. disappointed in a way," says the 6-foot, 165-pound centreman. "I've heard about the draft before. My cousin (Mike Kosiw) was drafted last year (by Owen Sound). I was kind of looking forward to it. Now I don't get to pul on the jersey or the hat." Still the entire build-up to the draft has been heady stuff for Rorabeck. "You always get scouts coming up to you and talking about going to their city. It's pretty crazy. I never expected it to be so hyped up. I really have no idea where I'm going," he says. Rorabeck, who had 28 goals and 38 assists in 44 games with the Oshawa TheUnDiet™ Scientific, hormonal, permanent weight loss GUARANTEED Contact Carol Selby-Reed 905-623-0985 CORRECTION NOTICE WE WISH TO DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING IN OUR CURRENT 'CAR CARE DAYS' FLYER BACK COVER - CAR CARE IIL BUCKET. 99- 3903.0 COPY READS: S75 WORTH OF VALUABLE COUPONS. ...... l : SHOULD READ: $30 WORTH OF VALUABLE COUPONS. orilfllil. 1 WE WISI1 TO DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING IN OUR CURRENT 'FISH ON! His coach from last season, Gil Hughes, is a long-time scout for the Generals and sings Rorabcck's praises. "Ryan is a solid hockey player, he has a lot of skill and is an excellent puck- handler," says Hughes. "He's certainly a thinker on the ice, he makes the smart play. More than anything anything he really understands the game. He's a little beyond his years thinking the game. He's also a boy of outstanding character, excellent make-up." Good enough to be taken second overall, which is where the Generals draft on May 57 Rorabeck, for one, doesn't think so. "I don't think I'm a second overall pick, but it would be nice to go to Os hawa." he says. Hughes, naturally wouldn't comment, comment, deferring to George Burnett, Os- hawa's coach and general manager. Burnett, in turn, isn't about to speculate speculate before the draft. "I would expect he'll lie a first-round pick, but whether lie's going to be an Oshawa Oshawa General has yet to be determined," says Burnett diplomatically. "Ryan's a fine young talent. An ex cellent player, lie's going to be a fine- player in this league." Wherever Rorabeck is drafted, lief won't lx; wearing the team's colours on) May 5. No jersey, no hat. Instead of the hype and excitement/ Rorabeck will be at home. "We have the- Intemet," he says. "I'll probably just be! sitting at home, waiting." ) More sports on page 16 : .ZEN SHIATSU Eddie Vlarachlian, BSc., s.T.
