THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 9,2001 PAGE 17 Oshawa accepted into Intercounty baseball league BY BRIAN McNAIR Skiff Writer OSIIAWA - Oshaxva has been accepted accepted into the Intercounty Major, Baseball League. The nine existing teams voted 8-l in favour of adding Oshawa to the league lor the 2002 season at a meeting in Cambridge Monday night. Troy May, who will serve as owner and CEO, and Sam Dempster, who will be the club's first field manager, made such a successful pitch to team representatives and league directors, it was accepted an hour-and-a-half later. "It was a year of hard work, but very rewarding," says May, who initiated initiated the bid, but didn't expect to hear a decision until Tuesday. 'This is such a good calibre of baseball and such a great league." ! , Indeed, the 81-year-old league is , considered among the best amateur • loops in Canada, boasting such former major leaguers as Rich and Rob Butler, ! who recently signed with the Toronto ; Maple Leafs. "I think the league is recognized as 1 the premier amateur league in Ontario ' and I do expect further interest," says commissioner Gary Thomas, who has ■ seen the league grow from six teams iover the past two seasons. "We were ; certainly interested in getting it up to ■ 10 teams as soon as possible." May had hoped to call the team Durham, but the league has no other regional teams and thus asked for it to be called Oshawa. A contest will be held to choose a nickname, with a final decision to be made in June. •With Oshawa becoming the only team east of Toronto (Barrie, Brantford, Brantford, Guelph, Hamilton, Kitchener, i London, St. Thomas and Waterloo are ; the others), travel was another concern. But Thomas says costs can be alle- iviated by doubleheaders and travel time reduced by scheduling mostly weekend games. Oshawa is expected to play the bulk of its home games on Saturday afternoons at Kinsmen Stadium. Stadium. ; Oshawa does have a history in the • league, having had a franchise play in the 1950s and .'60s. When the new club takes to the field just over a year from now, May says it will probably be young. "The established players aren't going to come to us first," he says. "I think we have to start with a young, fast, exciting team... With the talent from the Durham area from Pickering to Peterborough, we'll be competitive." In Dempster, the team will at least have a manager loaded with experi- 1 ence. Among other diamond accomplishments, accomplishments, he has had a hand in establishing establishing a local high school program, the Durham College team and the Best Ever Coaching Clinic.
