Barry McCabe of McCabe, Neill and Associates met with Heritage Minister Sheila Copps recently in a special presentation of the new dime, which began as a logo for one charitable charitable organization and has been adopted as a symbol for all who donate their time. Mr. McCabe's firm, the creative agency for the March of Dimes, originally originally created the logo featured on the dime for its client to reflect the "marching mothers" who began the organization 50 years ago, he explains. explains. "It was the March of Dimes 50th anniversary and we designed the logo to help them celebrate," he says, noting noting Maria Mali and John Neill, of the Toronto-based firm, were the artists who brought the illustration to life. "When March of Dimes started, it was the first grassroots charitable organization. organization. Mothers went door-to- door to collect money to help eradicate eradicate polio. The 'marching mothers' was the germ of the idea we had when we saw a photograph" from that era of the women. "We decided to profile three women." The only change the Royal Canadian Canadian Mint made to the logo, says Mr. McCabe, was to take out the March of Dimes tree and the words 'Marching Mothers.' It replaced those with a sun and die words 'International Year of the Volunteer.' The suit is representative representative "of the light and warmth" volunteers volunteers give, lie says. Normally, the mint will create special special quarters to celebrate occasions of significance. However, given the relevance relevance to the March of Dimes, it decided decided to go with the 10-ccnt piece this time, says Mr. McCabe. The Ottawa presentation couldn't have been timed better, points out Mr. McCabe. It was just in time for Mother's Mother's Day.
