PAGE 14THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 16,2001 Spring camp breaks ice for Gens draft picks BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor OSHAVVA - In George Burnett's words, the Oshawa Generals spring camp allowed the team's prospects to find a comfort level without necessarily feeling comfortable. Thirty-six hopefuls attended the camp, hying to impress Burnett enough to earn an invite to the fall camp. Some did, others clearly didn't, following following four workouts and scrimmages at North Oshawa Arena over the weekend. weekend. "There arc a number of kids, not a lot, since we tested them last training camp, who haven't progressed," says Burnett. "We're going to have a very small training camp (on Labour Day weekend)." The spring camp, a new innovation for the Generals, allows the team's hopefuls to get a feel for Oshawa and the Ontario Hockey League. "It eases their anxiety," says Burnett. "So much happens so fast at camp. It accelerates the process." Oshawa's top two picks - Nathan Horton and Josh Manning - performed up to expectations and several other players caught Burnett's eye. Winger Jordan Beimes, a fourth- round pick from a year ago, is "bigger and stronger," notes Burnett. Other players who stood out, according according to Burnett, were forward Steve White (12th round, 2001), defenceman Chris Petrow (11th round, 2000), forward forward Cory Snyder (fifth round, 2000), goalie Kevin Druce (ninth round, 2000) , defenceman Steve Thomas (invitee), (invitee), forwar d Chris Hulit (third round, 2001) , forward Luch Aquino (eighth round, 2001), - defenceman Justin Sawyer (ninth round, 2001), forward ' Brendan McIntyre (sixth-round, 2001) and defenceman Rob Jarvis (15th round, 2001). Aquino and Jarvis attended camp although although they've expressed an interest in landing an NCAA scholarship. Jarvis, brother of former Kitchener Ranger Wes Jarvis, would have been a higher pick in the draft had he not declared declared his intention, says Burnett. "We got to show everyone our program, program, what we're about, meet the parents," parents," says Burnett. "I think everyone left with a pretty positive feeling." Gens get a steal in second round BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer OSHAWA - George Burnett says there's a good reason Josh Manning didn't get drafted into the Ontario Hockey League a year ago. He wasn't eligible. So, when the strapping 16-year-old defenceman from Newfoundland was eligible and still available in the second second round of this year's entry draft, Burnett didn't hesitate to make him the first 1984-bom player selected on May 5. "He's as ready as any defenceman in the draft," says Burnett, the coach and general manager of the Oshawa Generals who chose Manning 23rd overall. "He's a big strong kid, a good skater who moves the puck pretty effectively." effectively." After getting passed over in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft in 2000, Manning moved to Ontario Ontario and played for the Wellington Dukes of the Provincial Junior A Hockey League this past season. "I thought I improved 100 per cent from where I was the year before," says Manning, a 6-foot-2, 190- pounder who played with the St. John's bantams the year before. "(The Provincial league) was good, fast hockey. It was a real thrill just to play that type of hockey." A stay-at-home type, Manning contributed contributed one goal and six assists while picking up 38 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Dukes last season. "1 think I have to get a lot stronger over the summer, slay in good shape, and just keep it simple and do what I do best," Manning says in assessing his chances of cracking the Generals' blue-line next season. Burnett's first impression of Manning Manning in a General uniform was favourable, saying his new recruit worked tirelessly during a training camp on the weekend. "l ie's a likeable kid who just comes to the rink to play every day," says Burnett. "Those arc the types of players players you want on your team."
