/ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 6,2001 PAGE 17 Defence vaults Green Gaels up the standings Team has best goals against average in division BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor BOWMANVILLE While the Clarington Green Gaels may not resemble the Founder's Cup Canadian championship team of last season, the Jr. B lacrosse club is continuing with one of the traditions of past teams. The Green Gaels have long prided themselves on being one of the top defensive teams in the league, and this year is no exception. And if the old adage that 'Defence wins championships' holds true, perhaps this year's edition edition shouldn't be counted out from contending just yet. As the league hits the midway midway point of the 20-game season, season, the Green Gaels are again among the leaders with the stingiest defence. Of the 20 teams, the Green Gaels have the fourth lowest goals against average at 6.6 per game. Only last year's league finalists Elora (4.5), Wallace- burg (5.7) and Spartan (6.0) are better. While much of the credit BRAD MacARTHUR 'Everybody on this team knows their role by now.' can be directed toward rookie goaltender Rick Passfield, who has started every game, the entire defence was praised by coach Brad MacArthur. "Everybody on this team knows their role by now," he said following last Thursday's 11-4 win over Welland. "The defensive players have picked it up well for us. We have the best goals against average in otir division division and I think that's a gold medal for our players on defence." defence." The team's resurgence in the past six games can be attributed attributed to the defence. I n the first three games of the season the Green Gaels posted posted only one win, allowing 10 goals against in each of the two losses. Things have changed quite dramatically since. In the last six games the team has posted a 5-l mark, keeping the opposition to six goals or less on four occasions. occasions. "We have a lot of rookies and we were shaky getting started off because a lot of guys hadn't played junior before," before," said forward Paul O'Grady, O'Grady, who had a five-point night against Welland last week. "We're getting used to (each other) and starting to come together." The improved play has resulted resulted in the Green Gaels steadily moving up the Mid East standings, leapfrogging over Scarborough and into first placé. The teams met last night in Scarborough (after Statesman deadline) with the Green Gaels at 6-3, holding a slim one-point lead on first place. Scarborough entered last night's game with a record of 5-3-1. The Green Gaels will host Oakville at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex on Thursday night at 8 p.m. A.J.
