THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 6,2001 PAGE 3 Province's private school tax credit proposal deserves a hearing: public school board chairman BOB WILUSHER 'The government hits an obligation (to ensure) it is the true will of the people.' Under proposed tax credit, parents can claim up to $3,500 per child by 2006 BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer CLARINGTON - A local Christian school vice-principal vice-principal says a $500,000 advertising advertising campaign by a provincial organization to help garner support for Provincial tax credits for private schools isn't at all out of line. "The ad campaign sounds extravagant," admits Jasper Hoogcndam, vice-principal of Bowmanvillc's Knox Christian Christian School. "But with 100,000 kids in private schools, we're talking $5 a student." The Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools issued an appeal for money to fund the campaign in a recent letter to Christian school supporters. "We believe that this hot debate is a major spiritual and intellectual war for the hearts and minds of families and children. Please give us the tools to fight on your behalf," wrote Adrian Guldcmond, executive executive director of the province's Christian school alliance, of the proposed Lwo- ycar ad campaign. The debate stems from a May 9 budget announcement from the Province, which promised tax credits to parents parents who send their children to private schools. By the end of the phase-in of the credit, in 2006, parents will be entitled entitled to tax credits of up to $3,500 per student. The government agreed last Tuesday to hold public hearings hearings into the credit, something the chairman of the local public public school board says is absolutely absolutely necessary. "The government has an obligation (to ensure) that it is the true will of the people to move in that direction, and I don't think they've got that," says Bob Willshcr, Clarington trustee with the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. KPR recently joined with other boards across Ontario in asking the Province to hold hearings on the matter, given fears the credit will both take money from public education, and possibly be the first step toward a charter school system. system. Under a charter school system, system, parents arc allowed to spend their education taxes at any school they choose, public or private. But, even though the hearings have been granted, granted, Mr. Willshcr wonders whether the government will really listen to input. "A month's hearings, all concentrated in Toronto... it casts some doubt on how seriously seriously they're ' taking our input," notes the chairman, who worries about the public school system should the tax credits be implemented. "Any time you fragment the funding of any public service, service, you really begin to damage damage pieces of it," says Mr. Willshcr. But Mr. Hoogcndam, who, in past, worked in Alberta where there has been funding for Christian education since 1965, says based on what he saw in Western Canada, he doesn't see the funding of private private schools as a threat to the public system. "I'm sorry, but I don't see a degradation of the public system" system" in Alberta, he says. -files by Torstar News Service Volunteers sought to help clean up Enniskillen Conservation Area DURHAM - Volunteers are needed to assist in clean-up days at a local conservation area Saturday, Saturday, June 9.
