THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 13,2001 PAGE A17 -- - *' 1 The Story of IGA in Canada This year, 2001, marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of IGA in Canada. Founded in 1926 by a Chicago accountant, J.Frank Grimes, IGA has grown from 64 stores that first year to thousands of stores in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Indonesia, China, Japan, and Korea. In Canada, the father of IGA was clearly Ray Wolfe, president of The Ontario Produce Company, who believed strongly that the Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA) was the model needed to help our Canadian independent grocers compete successfully against the growing buying power of the chains. After a couple of attempts to secure the IGA franchise for Southern Ontario, Wolfe finally succeeded in 1951 when his new distribution company, Oshawa Wholesale, opened Canada's first IGA store, in Toronto. By the end of 1951, there were 55 IGA retailers in Ontario, with total sales of nearly $7 million. Today, there are nearly 600 IGA stores across Canada, and their sales volume is approaching $6 billion! The strength for all IGA's, both in the past and in the future, lies in the commitment and dedication of the individual store owner. Over tho years, IGA stores gol progressively larger, offering a broader selection of products and services. Here are some national averages of 1951 prices from the old Dominion Bureau of Statistics (predecessor of Statistics Canada): Bread (1 lb. loaf) -12 cents Peanut Butter (18 oz. jar) - 38 cents Pickles (16 oz. jar) - 32 cents Coffee (reg. 1 lb.) - $1.02 Sugar (1 lb.) -12 cents Canned Apple Juice (20 oz.) -12 cents Apples (1 lb.) -11 cents Grapefruit (1/2 doz.) - 46 cents Tomatoes (1 lb.) - 25 cents Lettuce (1 lb.) -18 cents Canned Peas (15 oz.) -16 cents Eggs (1 doz.) - 72 cents Butter (1 lb.) - 68 cents Milk (1 qt.) - 20 cents Hamburger (1 lb.) - 68 cents Pork Sausage ( 1 lb.) - 59 cents Bologna (1 lb.) - 50 cents Canned Salmon (8 oz.) - 26 cents Cake Mix (14 oz, pkg.) - 35 cents NEWCH SUPER |Q I GRAND irana* tm mw i*cri* n >*w i iSTLE | MARKET OPENING • imnirm* -- tsctttx PWT AND VtOETASUI fiiiaor-- . .«• Ttearout - oci net. .it. When you convert the Imperial measurement to metric, it becomes fairly obvious that, not only are prices today not out of line, but some are real bargains compared to 1951. How would you like to pay $7.20 to $8.40 for a dozen eggs?
