Staff Writer BOWMANVILLE - Pre-trip lessons jn canoe safety were brought into clear focus for a group of Bowmanville High School students who rescued a pajr of German tourists whose canoe had capsized in Algonquin Park recently-' recently-' The BHS Outers Club was "on the first day, in the first leg" of a canoe trip in the park when teacher-chaperone Julie DoWling noticed what appealed appealed to be a canoe tipped over in the freezing cold water, says teacher Rick Konopka. ! "Sure enough, there were a couple of people in the ; water." Mr. Konopka and students students in two other canoes mqde their way toward the people, who turned out to be German tourists. 1 The Bowmanville group pulled the. pair to safety, and took the couple to ' shore, where they helped them warm up till they could paddle back to the park's access point. 'Students quickly "realized "realized how important safety is,! and how perilous the stipple tipping of the canoe can lie," says Mr. Kolrtopka, noting the May water temperature was abput 40 degrees F. • "If we had passed ADIBABBASI 'It's the code of the north. Ifyoit 're out there and you see somebody hurt, you go after them.' them by, the likelihood of their survival would have been grim." Still Mr. Konopka and some of the students involved involved in the rescue are quick to downplay their role as heroes. "I don't think it's really too important," says 16- year-old Chris Clegg, a Grade 10 student who was on his first trip with the Outers Club. "You sort of had to do it." Likewise, Adib Abbasi, an OAC student on his third trip with the club, says the most important thing about the rescue was how the club came together, together, "Everybody did a good job," he says. "There wasn't wasn't any immaturity on anybody's part." He says the school group simply did the right thing under the circumstances. "It's the code of the north. If you're out there and you sec somebody hurt, you go after them," says the 18-year-old.
