i PAGE 8THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 20.2001 They've made Tyrone a better place to live Community honours women for their lifelong commitment to village life BY JACQUIE MclNNES Staff Writer TYRONE - In one village live two women who have led very different different lives but share a love and commitment commitment to their community. Tyrone celebrated and honoured the lives of Edna Philp, 94 and Lav- erne Taylor, 89, at a special ceremony ceremony this weekend. As the community looked to the future with the inaugural dedication of playground equipment and a new basketball court for its youth, it took time to recall the dedication of these women, and others like them, who have left a legacy for the current generation generation to build on. Laverne Taylor was born in the second house down from the current community centre 90 years ago this Canada Day, July 1. Tyrone is the only place she has ever lived and that, she says, is no accident. "I really like it and I never wanted to leave it, ever." The daughter of Ethel and Robert Burgess, a 16-year-old Laverne began writing the Tyrone News for the Canadian Statesman, a job she shared with her mother for several years. In 1931 she married Wesley Taylor Taylor and they built their own home in Tyrone. Mrs. Taylor took part in "most any group there was" in the community, she recalls. That would have kept anyone busy but for this mother of 12 children children -- one of whom died in infancy - it was especially so. She doesn't recall recall being sick very often, but then who had time, she relates. This year is the 50th anniversary of the Loyal Orange, Benevolence Association, and as one of the original members, she is proud to celebrate it.;She. isn't- really sure what all the fuss is about 1 however . "I just helped out, whatever came along where you were needed. You made pies, you waited tables, attended attended meetings, whatever needed done." Today she is 'Gramma T' to 27 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. great-grandchildren. Edna Philp had only two children of her own but there are dozens more who will remember her fondly. When the war broke out, her husband Howard went off to serve his time, and Mrs. Philp resumed her career as a teacher, with her two young chil-_ dren at her side, running the Tyrone schoolhouse. She taught a class of about 40 children spanning eight grades and "never received any preparation time," she laughs. The resident of 55 years says she "always loved the children." She went on to teach at Central Public School in Bowmanville as well and long alter she had retired as a teacher, she ran after-school Bible clubs until retiring from that pursuit at the age of 85. "We were a close-knit little village." village." she recalls of Tyrone in days past. "There were a lot of things going on; ball games and football." She remembers remembers an annual Christmas concert concert at the original community hall and "lots of suppers" where residents gathered. "Nearly everybody in the community community went to church." This weekend for the first time in almost a decade, the community revived revived its annual Spirit Day celebrations celebrations with the park equipment dedication, dedication, a charily auction and a barbecue barbecue that ran all afternoon and into the evening. The children played games which kids of generations before them probably played too. A community dance finished off the evening and most of all, the village remembered two women who helped to make it a reality with their contributions through the years. =2^14 .... .. .
