THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 27,2001 PAGE 11 No new cases of E. coli in Durham: health department DURHAM - Although the number of long-term care facilities facilities impacted by an outbreak of E. coli in Durham Region has increased increased in recent weeks, the local health department reports there have been no new cases here. Glendene Collins, spokesman for the Durham Region Region Health Department, said Monday the investigation into the outbreak of ESBL E. coli is "still ongoing". She also noted 10 local facilities facilities are involved in that investigation investigation at this time. That number is up from the eight facilities health officials said were impacted by the outbreak outbreak when the health depart ment held a news conference on the issue in late May. But, Ms. Collins reports the number of facilities included in the investigation has increased simply because "these people move from facility to facility." She confirmed Monday there have been no new cases reported. As of June 22, 93 people in Durham Region have been "colonized" "colonized" with ESBL E. coli and 27 of those people have cleared the ESBL on their own, Ms. Collins said, noting 31 people who were at one time ESBL carriers carriers have died. Health officials had announced announced in May there had been 21 deaths among people who had been ESBL carriers. However, Ms. Collins reports although that number has risen to 31, the number of deaths that' "may be attributable to ESBL" remains at four. She explains when a person is colonized, that means they are a carrier of the bacteria but are not ill. The outbreak of E. coli has infected more than 100 people in Durham, York and Toronto in recent recent months. However, health officials have said the outbreak docs not present a cause for. alarm among the general public. The drug-resistant strain of E. coli was first detected in a cluster of seven patients at a Durham hospital last July. An investigation investigation revealed a potential link to two long-term care facilities here. The health department is continuing to monitor the out break and long-term care facilities facilities arc still being encouraged to take preventive measures to control control the spread of the bacteria, which is transmitted through contact with the feces of an infected infected person.
