'■ PAGE 16THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 27,2001 Former Eagles goalie taken in first round of NHL draft Adam Munro selected by Chicago 29th overall BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor SUNRISE, Fla. - Jay Harrison Harrison waited longer than he wanted wanted to before hearing his name called at Saturday's NHL draft. But at least there was a consolation consolation prize - Harrison, a Whitby resident who plays with the Brampton Battalion, could remain in the hockey-crazed GTA after being taken by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round (82nd overall). Former Bowmanville Eagles goaltender Adam Munro's wait to hear his name called was a much shorter one. The talented goaltender was taken in the first round (29th overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks. Munro played 13 games for the Eagles in the 1998-99 season season as a 15-year-old, posting a 3.68 goals against average. The . following season he only appeared appeared in two games before joining the Erie Otters of the OHL. "The kid is just an outstanding outstanding individual," says Eagles Director Director of Hockey Operations Mike Laing. "You could always tell" he was going to make it to the NHL. "As a 15-year-old on our team (Munro) was just awesome." awesome." While the road to get to the NHL may be a shorter one for Munro as a first round pick, things will be different for Harrison. Harrison. For a player rated as a possible possible first-round selection at the start of last season, Harrison didn't hide his disappointment about tumbling to the third round. "It's extremely tough, I'm not going to lie or sugar-coat anything," said Harrison in a phone interview. "It's one of the hardest things I've had to go through in my life." Harrison, a 6-foot-3, 200- pound defenceman who was a member of Canada's national junior team last season, was the first pick overall by the Battalion Battalion in the 1998 Ontario Hockey League draft. "It's a tough thing," he said. "But it was a good experience to go through. It's very sobering sobering and has left me with a lot of incentive and motivation. "Now there's not a lot of pressure on me. I don't have to prove anybody right, it's up to me to prove them wrong." Instead of being a first-round pick, which would have almost guaranteed a three-year, $3- million contract, Harrison will now have to prove his worth to the Leafs. "This is where the work starts, the draft is the easiest part because you don't have to do anything, but now I have to work for a contact." Harrison joins a defence- starved organization that used its first four picks to select defencemen. defencemen. Carlo Colaicovo of the Erie Otters, Toronto's first-round choice, Karel Pilar, of the Czech Republic, a second- round pick (39th overall) and Brendan Bell of the Ottawa's 67s, a third-round selection (65th overall), were all taken ahead of Harrison. Harrison, a defensive defenceman, defenceman, will return to Brampton this season and hopes to once again represent Canada at the world juniors, as he continues continues to pursue the same dream he's had since he was eight- years-old - to play in the NHL. RON LENYK/ Special to The Statesman Adam Mittiro, who played parts of two seasons with the Bowmanville Eagles, was selected selected in the first round by the Chicago Blackhawks during Saturday's NHL draft. "I can't control what happened," happened," said Harrison, referring to being a third-round pick, "I can only change the future." While Harrison leaves the draft with some disappointment, disappointment, it was a different story for Brandon Nolan of the Oshawa Generals. Rated 68th among North American skaters, Nolan was grabbed in the third round, 72nd overall, by the New Jersey Devils. Nolan, a 6-foot-1, 180- pound centre-right winger, had 15 goals, 23 assists in 52 games with the Generals last season. "I think it ? s a wonderful scenario scenario for him," said Oshawa coach and general manager George Burnett. "(New Jersey) has a wonderful developmental program, maybe the best in the NHL." Nolan couldn't be reached for comment. Another player with PALM BEACH Durham ties was also selected. selected.
