THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 27,2001 PAGE 3 New rules on the playground for parents funding equipment BY JENNIFER STONE Sniff Writer CLARINGTON - School councils will be given a heads-up by the local school board when it becomes clear parents arc going to have to raise funds to replace playground playground equipment which can no longer be repaired. And that should mean no surprise removals of playground playground equipment suddenly deemed unsafe, as was the case at some local schools last fall. Under a new policy set out by the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, playground playground equipment at area schools will be annually inspected inspected and maintained by the board, as much is allowed by the board's budget. But new equipment must be purchased purchased by the school community community council. The key to the new policy is that parent councils will be given notice about playground equipment in need of replacement, says Clarington trustee Nancy Coffin. "There shouldn't be any of the surprise of arriving in September and the playground playground being gone," she notes, 'flic removal of playground playground equipment had become become an issue last fall, when parent councils were told $50,000 to $70,000 worth of equipment across the board's jurisdiction would be removed, removed, since it didn't comply with ncxvly-tightcncd Canadian Canadian Standards Association International (CSA1) standards standards passed in 1998. Parents contended some of the equipment equipment removed was neither old nor unsafe, since it had just been installed over the past few years. Ensuring parent councils got proper notice when equipment required replacement replacement was "one of our big concerns," says Clarington FRANK'S FIREWORKS CANADA DAY SALE OPEN JUNE 26-JULY 1st 9am - 9pm AVAILABLE AT- r WHITBY MALL - BESIDE ARBY'S 1 BOWMANVILLE - CANADIAN TIRE ¥ûnBus^»1 your CAÔÏ RAM, TOUR SPECIALISTS! She recalls parents raising $65,000 over the tlircc-ycar period preceding preceding Newcastle Public School's 1996 opening to pay for play ground equipment there. "You work that hard to get it in there, you want to know what's going on with it," says Ms. Abraham. Abraham. But under the new policy, there should be no surprises, says KPR chairman and Clarington trustee Bob Willshcr. "Even if wc said to the council, we've repaired this (piece of equipment) five times, it will need to be replaced in two years, councils can start raising money," he notes. The board would love to purchase playground equipment equipment for its schools, says Mr. Willshcr. Willshcr. "Unfortunately, given the fi nancial realities the board is facing and will continue to experience, we arc not in a position to do so," he says. "We will ensure that all of the equipment we have is maintained and safe for our students, but any new equipment will have to be funded by the schools."
