THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 11,2001 PAGE 13 Green Gaels even in series with Barrie Home floor is no advantage after opening two games BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor BOWMANVILLE - The Clar- ington Green Gaels battled all season to secure first place in the Mid East division and enjoy home floor advantage advantage in the Jr. B lacrosse playoffs. So far, home floor advantage has meant nothing in the series against Barrie. Both teams posted victories in the other team's home building over the weekend. Barrie won the series opener 5-4 in Clarington on Saturday night, but the Green Gaels responded with a 12-7 victory in Barrie on Sunday night to even the series at a game apiece. The Green Gaels will host Game 3 of the best-of-five series tonight (Wednesday) at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. Game time is 8 p.m. "We've got to win a home game. That's what we played for first place all season for," says general manager Doug Luey in looking ahead to tonight's match-up. That may be easier said than done. During the regular season, the Green Gaels were mediocre on their home floor posting a 6-4 record as opposed to 8-2 on the road. DOUGLUEY 'We've got to win a home game.' Despite- the setback in the series opener on Saturday, the Green Gaels came out with a much better effort in Sunday's 12-7 win in Barrie, says Luey. The team's leading scorer in the regular season came through in the clutch in Barrie as Tyler Harris scored four times and added an assist. assist. Mike Carroll had two goals and five assists. Phil Greenen scored twice with one each for Eric Howe, Cody Derks, Nate Andres and Mark Unwin. One of the biggest differences in the opening two games was discipline, discipline, says Luey. In the first game of the series, the Green Gaels racked up 45 penalty minutes to Barrie's 23. Those totals were reversed in Game 2 with Barrie taking 67 minutes to the Green Gaels 27. Luey also adds that his club may have entered the first game of playoffs playoffs a little overconfident after winning winning six of its last seven games to close out the regular season, including including the last four in a row. "We were coming off a really big high and were a little cocky and anticipated anticipated winning the first game because because we beat Barrie handily (13-5) the last time we met. We just weren't ready." Game 4 of the series will be played Saturday night in Barrie at 8 p.m. If necessary, Game 5 will be played in Clarington on Sunday night at 8 p.m. THE SCOOP - Eric Howe and James Barton had three assists each in Sunday's win...Chris Bade is away at an NHL rookie camp for the Florida Panthers. Paul O'Grady is also out of the line-up with an injury. Both players are expected back for the second round of playoffs if the Green Gaels get that far...There are still some openings in the Jim Bishop Bishop Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday at Oliver's Nest Golf Course.
