Offsetting the disappointment of being passed over 289 times during the National Hockey League draft, the 18-ycar-old Whitby resident was invited to attend Canada's junior evaluation evaluation camp in August, the first step toward possibly playing at the world junior championships. "It means a lot," says Down, dealing first with the good news. "It's nice to know I'm ranked among the top juniors in the country." But he couldn't hide his disappointment disappointment at not getting drafted drafted following a breakthrough campaign in the Ontario Hockey League, where he led the Barrie Colts in scoring with 73 points in 62 games. "All I can really say is it's frustrating not to get drafted," says Down, a 5-foot-11, 175- pound centre. "They think if you're small, you can't play and can't perform at that level... I'm definitely going to take the Tin going to prove everyone wrong' attitude." If he does manage to prove the scouts wrong, it won't be without precedent. Selected in the fifth round, 91st overall, from the Oshawa Legionaircs in 1999, Down has been a steal for the Colts. Playing alongside a star-studded star-studded cast of Colls and battling injuries injuries in his rookie campaign, Down had 39 points in 43 games of the regular season. In the playoffs, playoffs, he stepped it up a notch, sharing the team lead in goals with 10 as the Colts won an DHL championship -and reached the Memorial Cup final. After a 35-goal, 73-point campaign where lie easily led the Colts in plus-minus at +24 this past season, Down seems well positioned to crack the top-10 in scoring next season. "My main goal is just to prove everyone wrong, go out and pick up 40 to 45 goals, prove I'm bigger bigger than my physical size," says Down, a feisty player who had 80 penally minutes last season. Down, who turns 19 on July 16, will spend the month in Whitby working with a personal trainer and playing a few rounds of golf before heading to Calgary for the evaluation camp. He will be joined by fellow Whitby resident Jay Harrison, a Brampton Battalion defenceman who was drafted in the third round by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The world championship will be held in Prague, Czech Republic. Republic. r i i i i i i i i i i i i ■ i BROKEN WINDSHIELD? GET SMART!!! WE PAY YOUR DEDUCTIBLE PLUS ...
