Gens' coach vows training camp will challenge veteran players BY BRIAN LEGREE Staff Editor OS1IAWA - Training camp doesn't start for another seven weeks, but George Burnett has already sent a not- so-subtle message to some of his veteran veteran players that no roster place is safe. Seething at missing the playoffs last season, Burnett is adamant about turning turning the Oshawa Generals around. Although never highly critical of the thin talent levels on last season's roster, Burnett talked openly about the lack of depth within the organization. That depth problem hampers clubs in two areas - overcoming injuries and structuring trades. It can also strip a club of its ability to replace players who aren't feeling pushed from below. Yes, Burnett did make about a dozen deals last season, but most were aimed at improving the club's depth chart. He continues to add to that depth this year without giving anything away. After adding Vladimir Skoda in the import import draft, Burnett sent Oshawa's second second import draft selection to Owen ; Sound for Luc Chaisson, a Whitby native native who scored 13 goals with the Attack Attack last season. - - Thirteen goals is not an eye-pop- ping total, but it's a number surpassed by just five Oshawa players last season. Burnett is surprisingly blunt about ' the acquisition of Chaisson, saying he's not certain where he fits in. "It's added depth," says Burnett of landing Chaisson. "We're challenging our veteran players to be a part of our program. It should create some competitive situations situations in camp." How competitive? The numbers suggest the real dogfight dogfight will be at forward, where at least four rookies - Nathan Horton, Jordan Beirnes, Skoda and Garett Vassel - are set to join the club. Factor in an intriguing overage situation situation and there are 21 forwards vying for 13 or 14 spots, an indication Burnett Burnett is successfully addressing the depth issue. "If your 18 and 19-year-olds are having a tough time making your hockey hockey club, it means you're getting better," says Burnett. Here's how the roster of potential candidates looks (with the final number expected to remain on the team and/or placed with the Oshawa Legionaires, in brackets): FORWARDS (14) Returnees: Jamie Johnson, Brandon Bronze medal forWebcoU-11 CLARINGTON - The Darlington boys' U-l 1 soccer team came away with a third-place finish at a tournament against teams in a higher age group.
