THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 11,2001 PAGES : Walk a giant ; step in fight against ALS , Families make pitch for support in ■ fighting disease L DURHAM -- A 13-year-old Os- hawa boy who recently lost his mom ' to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis " ' (ALS) asked for help in supporting an upcoming fund-raiser to increase awareness of the fatal disease. The Durham branch of the ALS Society of Ontario is hosting its first Walk to D'Feet ALS on Saturday, Sept. 29 on the waterfront at Rotary Park in Ajax. ' Jordan White, whose mother Susan passed away on Nov. 5, 2000 • after being diagnosed in November ■ 1999, asked Durham council Wednesday to participate in the event. . "I'm here to ask for your help for ; something that is very important to ; my family and me," he said. "This • disease took my mother from us and Ï our lives will never be the same." f Jordan, who'll be participating in • the walk along with his father Tom I- and sister Jennifer, told council the ! event is a chance for families who ; have lost a loved one to reflect on memories, to support people living i with ALS and to raise public aware- ; ness of the disease. • "I just hope they raise more ! money so they can get some treat- ; ment and a cure for it," he said. Louise Farr, whose husband David ■ died of ALS in December 1995 while ! serving as the Ward 2 Regional coun- . cillor from Pickering, is the honorary ; chairman of the event. "This is a really big deal for the . Durham chapter," Ms. Farr said in an ; interview, "Whatever we raise will be ; a success." ALS, which is also known as Lou . Gehrig's Disease, is a rapidly progressive, progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that attacks the motor neurons responsible responsible for transmitting elèctrical impulses from the brain to voluntary muscles throughout the body. When the muscles fail to receive messages, they eventually lose strength, atrophy and die, resulting in paralysis of the whole body. According to the ALS Society of Ontiirçio, there are about 2,000 Cana- diansifliving with ALS and two to three Canadians die every day of ALS. Mr. Farr died just 10 months after being diagnosed with the disease in February 1995. He was elected to council in the fall of 1994. "I kept asking David, 'Are you sure you want to die while serving on council?' Ms. Farr told councillors. "This is where he wanted to give of himself." The walk is designed to include teams of three or more people. Each team will be centred on a person living living with ALS or as a tribute to someone someone who died of the disease, Ms. Fan- explained. "It's very personal to me and my family," she said, adding she's delighted delighted to serve as honorary chairman. chairman. Durham's Walk to D'Feet ALS is being sponsored by Metroland Printing, Printing, Publishing and Distributing and Ontario Power Generation. The walk is five kilometres long. A kickoff event is being planned for August. For more information, call the Durham ALS office at 905-728-7243. Politician seeks legal opinion on retreat DURHAM -- Oshawa Mayor Nancy Diamond has asked the Region to get a written legal opinion on whether a retreat held in May contravened the Municipal Municipal Act. "I would appreciate a written opinion as to the appropriateness of that meeting," meeting," she said Wednesday. "I'm formally asking for that." The mayor expressed concerns last month that minutes taken at the retreat, held May 16 to 18 at the Pinestone Resort Resort in Haliburton, were forwarded to Regional council for approval in mid- June. She said then that the Municipal Act sets clear guidelines regarding what constitutes a meeting of elected officials and has argued that those guidelines weren't followed. The mayor maintained if a meeting is a formal meeting of coun cil, then minutes arc taken and there are certain requirements under the Municipal Municipal Act that the meeting must be open to the public, which she says wasn't the case at the retreat. The mayor has also pointed out that while the act allows for councillors to hold retreats, they cannot make decisions or vote at a retreat. "We can work within the law," Mayor Diamond told her colleagues Wednes day. However, Durham Chairman Roger Anderson continues to maintain, "We broke no laws". Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt pointed out councillors did not approve any binding binding resolutions at the retreat but were simply "trying to get our heads around governance". Mr. Anderson reported the Region's solicitor will respond to Mayor Diamond's request. To advertise in this weekly feature, call your sales rep.
