(ASI) ol St. Catharines is applying to the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) to use low level chlorination as a treatment protocol (or the control ol zebra mussels within the Blue Circle Cement raw water supply system. The zebra mussel was introduced to the Great Lakes in 1986 and has since adversely impacted industrial and municipal water consumers throughout the region by colonizing the inside surfaces ol facility piping. ASI is proposing to inject liquid sodium hypochlorite into the cooling water system at low levels (approximately drinking water concentration) known to control zebra mussel colonization. The effluent (discharge) will be stringently monitored under guidelines set forth by Ihe MOE for zero discharge ol chlorine. The length of Ihe program is approximately ten to fourteen days in duration and will be performed on a yearly basis as required. The 2001 operation will begin approximately August 18, 2001.
