Gaylord Powless, who led the Os- haxva Green Gaels to four of their seven consecutive Minto Cup junior lacrosse championships in the 1960s, died Saturday at age 54 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Those who knew Powless remember remember a fun-loving individual with incredible incredible instincts on the lacrosse floor. "Gaylord was a tremendously talented talented player," says Brooklin's Peter Vipond, who played with Powless on the 1967 Minto Cup-winning team. "He could do it all... He was a good scorer, a good faccoff man, a hard worker and he was big enough to take all the abuse." Born on the Six Nations reserve, Powless was the oldest of 14 children and began learning the game at the age of two from his father, Ross, also recognized recognized as one of the best players of his generation. Both are members of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the only father-son tandem so inducted in the players' category. Powless picked up three goals and five assists in his first game and went on to win the Jim McConaghy Memorial Memorial Cup as most valuable player in the Minto Cup that year. "He had a little bit of spirit in him that didn't always conform to Mr. Bishop's ideas, but lie ended up to be very' successful," recalls Peter Abram- czuk, who has been associated with the Green Gaels organization for more than 30 years. "He had some very unique and individual individual talents, but he was still coach- able in the sense he would play a system." system." Powless posted some remarkable numbers and pocketed numerous awards in his four-year stint with the Gaels. He won two scoring titles, two McConaghy Cups, two sportsmanship awards and, of course, the four national national championships. "Gaylord always played big in the big games - and that's the true measure of a great athlete .in any sport," says Vipond, who watched Powless score an eye-popping 72 points in 12 playoff games in 1967. his final year with the club. Bob Hanna, the current coach and general manager of the Whitby Warriors, Warriors, played alongside Powless in Detroit Detroit of the NLA professional league in 1968. Like Vipond, Hanna remembers an indomitable spirit. "Gaylord was just a great player, a tremendous competitor," says Hanna, recalling in particular a four-game trip to the west coast. "He was absolutely magnificent in all four games. I've never seen a guy get keyed on so much or take so much of a beating. He just came back and back and back. He was a true warrior." Powless won the Tom Longboat award as the top native athlete in Canada as a 17-year-old in 1964 and now has a Canadian Lacrosse Association Association Junior A sportsmanship award named in his honour. He leaves behind wife Patti, daughters daughters Michelle, Gaylenc and son Chris, who plays for the Six Nations Jr. A lacrosse team. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning.
