\ PAGE 8THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, AUGUST 1,2001 Report card time for Ontario municipalities Provincial government initiative available in early August BY SUSAN O'NEILL Staff Writer DURHAM -- Local taxpayers can expect the first report card measuring Durham's performance in service delivery delivery early in August, says Roger Anderson. Anderson. But, the Durham chairman said area residents might have to wait until next year to get a more accurate picture of how the Region's municipalities measure measure up compared to others in Ontario. "I don't think this year's ratings or report report cards will be as important as next year's," Mr. Anderson said. "We're not all on the same page yet... I think next year will be fairer." The Province announced last fall it would force all cities and towns to issue a report card to taxpayers each year detailing detailing how well they are delivering local Durham College honours alumni services. Data from 2000 is to be used to measure measure and compare how efficiently municipalities municipalities deliver water, fire, road and other services. The Region reluctantly agreed to participate participate in the program after the Province informed Durham councillors that all municipalities arc mandated under a regulation regulation of the Municipal Act to submit the required performance measurement information to the provincial government. government. Mr. Anderson, who attended a Regional Regional chairs meeting in Sudbury this past week, said there was a lot of concern concern about how the Province is going to use the information. He also said the various regional rep resentatives wanted to "make sure we're all doing them the same way. Depending on how you read the information, you're going to be good or really bad. There's no in between." However, he expects Durham residents residents will be "fairly happy with what they see... Durham is pretty efficient in miming services." He noted the information included in the report cards is public information anyway. According to the Ministry of Municipal Municipal Affairs Web site, municipalities can report the results to taxpayers through several different avenues. The information information will also be posted on the Region's Web site at www.rcgion.durham.on.ca once the data has been released.
