PAGE 16 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, AUGUST 15,2001 Merchants swept away in final BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer BROOKLIN - This wasn't the way it was supposed to shake down for the Brooklin Merchants. ! Rather than take a step forward and win a President's Cup national championship after coming so close a year ago, the Merchants took a step back and failed to make it out of their own Ontario Senior Lacrosse League. In fact, they were swept away in embarrassing fashion in the league final, losing 8-2 to the Owen Sound Woodsmen in Game 3 Saturday at the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena. "I think it was a matter of them wanting it more than we did," says coach Kevin O'Brien, who guided the Merchants to a league best 13-1 record during the regular season. "We just couldn't find anything that would give us a spark. We couldn't feed off anything." After losing a pair of tight contests to start the series - 10-9 and 12-10 - the Merchants faced Owen Sound's second-string goalie in Game 3, but found him to be an even tougher nut to crack. Only Mike French and Zac Aitken scored for Brooklin, the latter coming late in the game. "Obviously the coach didn't deliver," deliver," says O'Brien. "We were the better better team on paper. The coach has to take responsibility." Owen Sound now advances to the Presidents Cup in New Westminster, B.C., Aug. 23-27. "The reality is they beat us three straight," O'Brien says of the Woodsmen, Woodsmen, who were 10-4 in the regular season. "They were the better team in the series and hats off to them." Inter Oshawa Dunn in by Wanderers OSHAWA - Ryan Dunn scored twice as the Wanderers blanked Inter Oshawa 4-0 to claim the Terry Kelly Cup title in Motor City Soccer League play Sunday.,- U'; tU j. Whitby Iroquois, which finished third during the season with four wins, a draw and seven losses, won the John Barnes Cup earlier in the season.
