Father Patrick Herlihcy spent the last month in custody since being picked up by Lindsay-area OPP for breaching his house arrest sentence. The 49-year-old man was found guilty earlier this year of sexual assault and exploitation for "touching, groping and kissing" his victim on numerous occasions between 1984 and 1988, while the youth was between 14 and 17. In May, the former parish priest of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic church in Newcastle and chaplain at St. Stephen's High School in Bowmanville was spared jail and given an 18-month conditional conditional sentence by Mr. Justice Alf Stong. The judge ordered Father Herli- hey confined to his Lindsay-area home 24-hours a day, except for medical emergencies and one hour Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for shopping, personal business and exercise. He was arrested last month after a neighbour observed him walking his sister's dog on Thursday, July 5. He was ordered held in custody until a hearing last Thursday, during which Justice Stong found him guilty of breaching the conditional sentence. The judge could have ordered the priest to serve the balance or a portion of the sentence in jail, but decided the 30 days he spent in custody were sufficient sufficient punishment. He released the sex offender to serve the balance of his sentence sentence at home under the same terms. As part of the sentence the judge also ordered Father Herlihey write three letters to newspapers outlining his crimes and the impact of the judicial process and organize a panel discussion for the Roman Catholic clergy in the Peterborough area on the topic of abuse.
