Outscored 19-9 in three-game skid BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor BOWMANVILLE - A one-word answer by general manager and coach Curtis Hodgins is a good indication of the state the Bowmanville Eagles are in as the regular season gets under way Friday. When asked if the team is where he wants it to be, or where he thought it would be after seven exhibition games, he didn't hesitate with an emphatic "no" following Sunday's 7-3 loss to Aurora. "We are a bit more unsettled than I was hoping for," he admitted. Part of the problem is that three players players still remain in OHL training camps, and the Eagles are unsure when, or if, any of the trio will return. Defencemen Bill Burgio is in Sudbury, Chad Elliott in Oshawa while rookie forward Simon Barg is in Barrie. Burgio and Elliott were expected to anchor the Eagles' defence, defence, while Barg was expected to add some offence as an 18-year-old rookie. Complicating matters further are injuries, injuries, which have prevented the team from "being able to work on some line combinations," says Hodgins. Sunday's loss to Aurora at the Garnet Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex was the third in a row for the Eagles, who also dropped a 4-2 decision in Oshawa on Saturday night. The Eagles finished the pre-season with a record of 2-5 and were outscored 19-9 in the final three games. "We've got lots of work to do and a couple of holes to fill," before the final roster is set, said Hodgins. Against Aurora, Chris McDaniel, Sean Brackin and Matthew Caruana had the goals in the loss for the Eagles, who trailed 3-1 after the first period and DURHAM FLAMES Professional Soccer Club SOCCER CLINIC For youth 6-14 years of age Sunday September 23,2001 - 9 am to 1 pm at Lakevlew Park Soccer Fields, Oshawa Cost $25 per child Each child receives a Flames T-shirt, McDonald's lunch and a family pass to the Flames game against Montreal Dynamites at 6 pm Thu applicant agrees that DURHAM FLAMES PROFESSIONAL SOCCER CLUB and/or it's proprietor will not he held responsible lor any accident or loss however caused, and agrees to release the proprietors from all claims or damage which may arise as a result of such accident or loss. Jon Ross had a pair of assists. When the regular season opens in Lindsay on Friday, followed by the home opener Sunday against Port Hope, Hodgins is hoping his team's lack of size is overcome by its speed, grit and good goaltending. "We're going to play an up-tempo game and rely on our skill and speed. I want us to be a real tough team to play against." Friday's game in Lindsay gets under way at 7:30 p.m. while Sunday's home opener is a 6:30 p.m. start. THE SCOOP - In Saturday's 4-2 loss in Oshawa, Matt Caruana and Colin Baker scored Bowmanville's goals...Because of injuries, the Eagles' roster was three players under the limit for both weekend games...The Eagles will play three afternoon home games this season, Nov. 25 against Cobourg, Dec. 16 against Lindsay and Jan. 27 against Peterborough.
