t THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, SEPTEMBER 12,2001 PAGE 15 Crouch a stand up guy Eagles' forward named team captain BY BRAD KELLY Sports Editor Two seasons ago, Kyle Crouch was toiling in a men's league, apparently apparently done with minor hockey after graduating from the Whitby midget Triple A team. Playing at a higher level, more specifically with a junior team, was seemingly out of the question. But last season he attended the training camp of the Bowmanvillc Eagles and was signed by the team. By the end of the season, he was the team's third leading scorer, .averaging .averaging a point per game. Things just keep getting better. On Sunday night, following the final game of the exhibition schedule, schedule, Crouch was introduced as the team's captain, going from beer league to the toast of the team. "Getting picked out of (the men's league) to come and play junior -- it's quite an honour to play one year and be named captain," says the 20- year-old. In his one season with the Eagles, Crouch, a ccntrcman, was impressive offensively, posting 22-24-46 totals in 45 games. This season, there was little doubt in the mind of general manager and coach Curtis Hodgins regarding where the leadership would emanate from. "(Crouch) came to us last year as an unheard of and unproven player and he certainly repaid us," says Hodgins. "He's very highly thought of by . everyone in the organization. He's a player the other players look up lobe's lobe's a guy who stands out." While being named captain includes includes a number of responsibilities. Crouch, a part-time Whitby firefighter, firefighter, doesn't expect to alter his style of play at all. "I'm just going to try and play hockey," says Crouch, who was named Dcvitt Trophy winner for dedication and loyally last season. "It's great to be the captain because because you arc the go-to guy in the room and you get to talk to everybody everybody in the room and make sure they are ready to go. "I'll just play my game and try my best to keep everybody happy."
