Teen off to National Ballet School BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer HAMPTON 114 Foi v many' kids, time in summèr 1 School seems more of a punishment than a treat. But for 14-year-old Hampton resident resident Nathan Blake, summer school may just have been a good career move. After attending the National Ballet Ballet School's summer program as one of 150 dancers chosen from 1,000 hopefuls, Nathan has been accepted as a full-time student at the prestigious prestigious Toronto dance school. Only 38 of the summer students were chosen to attend on a full-time basis. The teen, who previously danced with Fritha King at Hoofers Performing Arts in Oshawa, says he's looking forward to the experience. "It was all fun during the summer, so hopefully it will be just as much" during the school year, says the Grade 9 student, noting, given his summer experience, lie's not nervous nervous about attending the school fulltime. fulltime. "I've got a lot of friends there, because because I was there for the month," he says. Nathan expects to attend "a ballet class or two" each day, along with several other dance-related classes. As well, students arc required to complete regular academic studies. The dance teachers don't seem unbearably strict so far, says Nathan. "They are disciplined, but not to the point you would think," he says, adding, "I like the school teachers better too. "If you say you were up till 2 a.m. last night rehearsing 'The Nutcracker,' Nutcracker,' they believe you," he says. He may just have to make that excuse - Nathan is expected to be one of the school's students to perform in The National Ballet of Canada's production production of 'The Nutcracker' at Christmas.
