PAGE 18THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, NOVEMBER 28,2001 Generals won't bid to be host city for Memorial Cup BY BRIAN LEGREE Stu ff Editor OSIIAWA - The Oshawa Generals could put themselves in position to make a bid to host the Memorial Cup - and they would like to host Canada's junior hockey showcase. But don't count on them actually making a bid to host the event. Confused? It's quite simple really. The Ontario Hockey League allows the top four teams in each conference at the 30-game mark to bid to host the Memorial Cup next May. The Generals play their 30th game of the season Dec. 7 in Kitchener. Oshawa is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference Conference standings and should they move up a position, it will enable them to bid for the Memorial Cup, which takes place May 18-26,2002. But the club won't bid for the Cup, suggesting Oshawa isn't in a suitable position position to host such a significant event. "Is it something I'm interested in? Absolutely," says George Burnell, Os- hawa's coach and general manager. "If you have an opportunity to host a Memorial Cup, that's something that is part of our game, it's a big achievement to say you have hosted it and obviously you get to play in it. But I think under the present circumstances I don't think it's even a reality that our building and the things that are necessary to do that will allow us to host a Memorial Cup." Oshawa last hosted the Memorial Cup in 1987, when it beat North Bay in a Super Series between regular season division winners to determine which team would host the event. "I know it's been here before and it was a big success, but I think the expectations expectations and the requirements have kind of passed by what we can offer here," says Burnett. Generals' owner John Humphreys is even more blunt. "We don't comply with Memorial Cup guidelines," he says succinctly, suggesting suggesting the area lacks the necessary hotel accommodations and banquet facilities facilities to host the Memorial Cup. Teams currently in position to bid for the Cup are Belleville, Barrie, St. Michael's and Peterborough in the Eastern Eastern Conference, Plymouth, Erie, Sarnia and Sault Ste. Marie in the Western Conference. Conference. GENERALLY SPEAKING: Oshawa Oshawa heads into Peterborough Thursday night coming off a 6-3 homc-icc loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Grey Cup Sunday. Rookie Nathan Horton Horton continued his strong play, scoring twice. The first-round draft choice now has 11-15-26 numbers in 26 games this season. Overager Brian McGrattan had Oshawa's other goal. . Jeff Richards fired the hat trick for the Greyhounds.. .After posting the shutout in Friday's 4-0 win in Kingston, overager overager Derek Dolson was yanked by Burnell Burnell after coughing up four goals on 19 shots Sunday, the fourth goal coming on a slap-shot from the blue-line. Dolson has started Oshawa's last 12 games, but has been pulled in favour of rookie Kevin Drucc in four of the past seven outines. Asked if he was concerned about Dolson's play, Burnett said: "Absolutely "Absolutely and I'm sure if you ask him, he would lie and should be. But as I said, this isn't all Derek. We expect all our veteran guys to lead us."
