PAGE A10THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, DECEMBER 19,2001 GM Canada makes change at the top Maureen Kempston Darkes moves on DURHAM - Maureen Kempston Darkes, president of General Motors of Canada Ltd. and vice president of GM Corp., is heading off to wanner climes. As of Jan. 1, the 53-year-old, Toron- to-bom executive will become GM's president of GM Latin America, Africa and Mid-East and join the company's automotive strategy board. She'll report to Rick Wagoner, president and chief executive officer of the America-based company. "Maureen has been a strong leader for GM of Canada, delivering solid business business results during her tenure as president," president," Mr. Wagoner said. "I know she'll do a great job for us in the Latin America, America, Africa, Mid-East region, where we plan to build on our traditionally strong position." Ms. Kempston Darkes will move from Osliawa to Miami but will retain responsibility for Quebec, where the Ste-Thercsc plant is scheduled to close next fall, leading to 1,100 people out of work. She's said she intends to continue her efforts to find another use for the plant. She said she's looking forward to her move but called her years in Canada the proudest of her career. "1 am very excited about the new challenges of leading the Latin America, Africa and Mid-East operations for General Motors Corp," she said. "The dedicated men and women of GM of Canada have helped make the past seven-and-a-half years as president of GM of Canada the proudest and most enjoyable time of my career." After joining joining the GM of Canada legal staff in 1975, she moved up in jobs of responsibility responsibility in the legal and public policy areas with both the corporate legal staff in Detroit Detroit and at GM of Canada. She also worked in the treasurer's office in New York from 1985 to 1987. She was named GM of Canada vice-president of corporate affairs in 1991 and elected to its board of directors. She took on addi tional duties as general counsel and secretary secretary of GM of Canada in July 1992. In her current position, she also senes on the board of CAMI Automotive, GM's joint venture in Canada with Suzuki Motor Coip. Mr. Grimaldi began his GM career in 1976 with the worldwide product planning planning staff in Detroit. He joined the corporate corporate financial staff in 1978. In the 1980s, he worked in several planning and marketing positions at the former Fisher Body Division, the corporate comptroller's staff, the former Buick- Oldsmobilc-Cadillac Group, the Pontiac and Oklsmobile divisions. In 1992, Mr. Grimaldi became finance director for the North American marketing operations, operations, and a year later he was named executive executive director of North American Operations Operations Planning and a member of the NAO Strategy Board. The career moves were the result of the retirement May 1 of GM Group vice-president and president of GM Asia Pacific, Rudy Schlais. Ms. Kempston Darkes was bom and raised in the Toronto area and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and law degree from the University of Toronto. She seives on a number of business and volunteer volunteer boards and has been awarded an Order of Ontario and is an officer of the Order of Canada. You belter watch out!
