Seeing so many people gathered in my honour has given me a warm glow inside, one I'm sure is going to remain with me for a very long time. The fact that so many of you were able to keep the whole affair a surprise is in itself no small feat, given that I try to know what's going on in town, particularly in the office. The organization and work put forth by the staff in Bowmanville and Oshawa was outstanding. The staff at the OCNA offices in Burlington were wonderful in providing my wife Carol additional information on my career and my thanks go to them as well. Seeing so many of my colleagues from all areas of the Metroland organization including editorial, circulation, composing, administration and advertising staff from Cobourg/I'ort Hope, Port Perry, Uxbridge, Oshawa and Ajax was heart-warming and the arrival of Bruce Danford from Peterborough was a wonderful surprise and much appreciated. The kind comments from all of you mean so much. Words can't describe how I felt when l saw my son Kyle, who had flown in from Banff, and the presence of my daughter Ginette and my son-in-law Guy who had arrived from Montreal. The surprise was total and one which was orchestrated by Carol who managed to keep me totally "in the dark". A huge "Thank You" must go to Publisher Tim Whittaker, Advertising Director Fred Eismont, Clarington Mayor John Mutton and Bowmanville BIA Chair Ron Hooper for their kind words. The cards and tributes received from Metrpland President Murray Skinner, Mayor Mutton, Ontario Premier Mike Harris, John O'Toole, MPP and MP Alex Shepherd will always be treasured. The gifts received from the staff and the Company were incredible (Eddie, I got the hint!). Throughout my 38 years at the Canadian Statesman I've been honoured to work with some of the most talented people in the industry such as Don Bishop who was an integral part of the Statesman for over -10 years, and of course, John James who gave me the opportunity in the first place. An Advertising Department's success is determined by the amount of creativity possessed by its staff and when I think back over the years and remember tire tremendously talented individuals who have graced my department, such as Heather Lyle and Lavcme Morrison, 1 know I have been truly blessed. Thank you to my-friends from James Publishing for being present; former hockey parents and players, friends and neighbours and especially members of my. family who made the evening complete. To everyone who helped me celebrate such a memorable occasion please know I'll never forget your kindness. God Bless one and all. Sincerely, Brian Purdy Patti L. Barrie, A.M.C.T.
