A citizens' group took over guardianship of the land, west of Main Street between the 4th and 5th concessions, last year from the Ministry of Natural Resources Resources (MNR) after the ministry closed down an adjacent tree farm and "abandoned" the land, said John Slater, a member of the Orono Crown Land Trust Inc. The group is a charitable stewardship stewardship organization made up of volunteers from Clarington and beyond, he said. "The land has been retained for public non-user pay use," in a partnership agreement with the Province, explained Mr. Slater, who added, "We arc stewards of this jewel in the Municipality of Clarington." But Mayor Mutton said the municipality cannot set a precedence precedence of funding stewardship on land that is owned by the provincial provincial government. Instead, he said, the municipality can provide provide "in-kind services" for the group. As well, the mayor added, he has attempted to find the group the money it needs through other sources. He con tacted Ontario Power Generation's Generation's Darlington Generating Station community office to determine determine if the group may qualify for a grant from the electricity generator, which frequently donates donates to causes within Clarington. "It would probably qualify under our citizenship category," says Phil Lesauvagc, Darlington Generating Station spokesman, who says the company likes to partner on environmental projects. projects. "I had indicated to the mayor we would likely get a positive positive reaction," to their request, he says, adding, "There may be an opportunity for us to work with them too in addition to providing providing financial help." In addition, the mayor noted money lie contacted the MNR office and has received an indication seed funding may be provided from the provincial ministry for the group. "There have been good solid alternatives presented," said Ward 3 and 4 Regional Councillor Councillor Charlie Trim, who noted he personally supports the land trust group but cannot offer municipal taxpayers' money to pay for further further downloading from the provincial government. "This is the year of the volunteer," volunteer," countered local Ward 4 Councillor Gord Robinson, who said he would like the municipality municipality to provide the group funding. Ward 1 Councillor Jane Rowe questioned why the group had been "left hanging" without insurance insurance when the Province turned over responsibility of stewardship to the group. She said she too would favour giving the group "seed money." Council voted against providing providing money to the group at this time in light of the other funding opportunities.
